Working from a Coffee Shop: Java Love in Montclair, NJ

Java Love, which recently celebrated its ten-year anniversary, is a woman-owned, artisan coffee roasting company created out of a personal mission and passion for community connection and quality coffee done right. I visited both their NJ locations, one in downtown Montclair and the other in Upper Montclair.

The brains behind Java Love are Montclair residents and coffee enthusiasts Kristine-Ellis Petrik and Jodie Dawson.

They are dedicated to coffee with integrity. Coffee is handcrafted and roasted in small batches showcasing the character of each bean. All of their coffees are either organic and/or sustainably farmed, fair trade, and/or rainforest alliance certified.

Coffee blends you’ll find come from different regions all over the world including Colombia, Costa Rica, Brazil, Ethiopia, and the Hudson Valley.

Their premium espresso is a traditional American espresso blend, featuring beans from South and Central America, Indonesia, with a bit of Robusta. They also feature a dark roast called the “Bad Ass Brew”, a four-bean blend with “bright, sweet, bold, and earthy tones”.

Caffeinated and decaffeinated options include lattes, matcha, espresso, americanos, and their own blend of teas.

Their Upper Montclair location, located on Bellevue Ave steps away from the train station, was designed in collaboration with a local artist with recycling and sustainability in mind. The seating, service areas, and walls come from reclaimed Catskill wood.

The pallets the coffee is delivered on and the burlap coffee sacks the beans are shipped on are incorporated into the decor. The counter is crafted from three old doors pulled from people’s garbage and a shipping container salvaged after Hurricane Sandy.

Drink at Bellevue Ave: Yogic Chai Latte

Foodwise Java Love is great options for breakfast and lunch which include gluten-free and vegan options. They also have a wide variety of baked goods including their “monuts” (buttermilk muffins rolled in cinnamon and sugar) which are a big favorite for customers.

They were out of monuts during my visit, but I happily grabbed a chocolate chip muffin instead.

I also stopped by their downtown Montclair location on Church Street the next day for a regular coffee.

It’s quite a hot stop in the downtown area! Even on a very rainy day they had plenty of customers.

If you’re in New York, be sure to visit their Flagship Shop located in the Sullivan Catskills – just down the road from the home of the 1969 Woodstock Music Festival. Or you can order their coffee online!
