Devil’s Creek Brewery to Open in Collingswood

Devil’s Creek Brewery will be opening in the quaint, picturesque town of Collingswood, New Jersey, just a stone’s throw from historic Philadelphia. This location is the perfect place to introduce artisanal craft brews! The Collingswood community has been dry since 1888, but with the debut of many wonderful family restaurants along the town’s main corridor, it just makes sense to invite the world-old tradition of brewing to the neighborhood, to help complement its other offerings. The owners of the soon-to-open brewery and the brewhouse team hope to contribute to the town’s thriving small business atmosphere and work together with other area business owners to make Collingswood a go-to destination.

Anthony Abate, owner and head brewer, a New Jersey resident and Philly transplant, has been home brewing for over 15 years. He’s always dreamed of opening his own brewery, especially after placing in the Samuel Adams homebrew competition. That personal triumph fueled his desire to share his beer with others. And while he works days as a full-time engineer, he spends most of his off hours tweaking recipes, visiting breweries and generally partaking of the craft beer culture.

Kathy Abate, the brewery’s other owner and Anthony’s wife, who learned the fine art of home brewing from her husband, has been in the advertising and graphic design field in South Jersey for many years. Kathy plans on keeping the place busy with many events, ranging from special beer tastings to Girls Night Outs to charity events. The brewery is especially looking forward to working with the Collingswood community to help with benefits and fundraising efforts for local worthy causes.

Being in New Jersey and visiting local farm stands has really inspired Anthony to take advantage of the diversity of the region’s native fruits, vegetables and herbs, from tomatoes to cranberries to blueberries. Ultimately he hopes that these ingredients will make up some really exceptional and unique ales.

The brewery’s team plans on launching in late April/early May 2016 with a seasonal lineup. Expect to see maibocks, wheats, saisons, blondes and Anthony is working on a fruity IPA and double IPA. This 7-barrel operation will have 8 rotating taps, so choices will be abundant.

The brewery location, on the corner of Haddon Avenue and Powell Lane is ideal. On the ground floor of Collingswood’s The Devils Creek Brewery - KegLumberyard apartments, there’s a great sightline onto Collingswood’s main commercial corridor, great for people-watching and beer tasting. In addition to floor-to-ceiling windows, the brewery will be fitted out with rustic touches, from reclaimed wood walls to funky lighting fixtures. The general feel of the space will be warm and inviting.

Devil’s Creek’s goal is to be a welcome addition to the thriving restaurant and entertainment scene already happening downtown. Currently, there’s everything from a farmer’s market to Second Saturdays to local art shows and theatre in addition to many BYOB restaurants. The brewery will offer 64 oz. take-out growlers to patrons that want to enjoy their beer with a delicious meal at a neighboring eatery. Or customers can come into their tasting room and sample beers onsite.
