ButACake Makes History as the First Legal Pot Brownie Available in New Jersey

ButACake is excited to announce that they are the first legal pot brownie available in New Jersey, with sales beginning on April 16th, 2024.  “As a proud resident of New Jersey, born and raised, it is an extraordinary honor for ButACake to be the trailblazers in bringing legal pot brownies to our state’s shelves,” says Matha Figaro, CEO of ButACake.

“This momentous achievement marks a significant milestone for our company and symbolizes a groundbreaking shift in our local cannabis landscape. We are thrilled to lead the charge in providing innovative, high-quality products to our fellow New Jerseyans, and we look forward to shaping the future of our industry with integrity, passion, and a deep sense of community.”

The manufacturing operations are overseen by CannPowerment, a company that shares ButaCake’s commitment to excellence and is majority-owned by Matha Figaro, CEO of ButACake.

“What makes this achievement even more special is that each brownie is crafted from scratch, by hand, by myself and my partner Yasmin Obie, both proud Black women born and raised in the heart of New Jersey,” adds Matha Figaro. “This endeavor symbolizes not just a business milestone, but a celebration of our roots, our dedication to quality, and our commitment to breaking barriers in the cannabis industry.”

The ultimate combination of two classic treats swirled with peanut butter and local strawberry jam, creating a mouth-watering flavor explosion. Ingredients include Azuca, Butter, Chocolate, Eggs, Flour, Sugar, Salt, Peanut butter, and strawberry jam. Each brownie boasts a fast-acting onset in under 20 minutes with Azuca time infusion. Packaged individually for convenience, these brownies contain 10mg THC per serving, promising a delightful and consistent experience with every bite.

The brownies will be available at New Jersey retailers Cannabist Vineland, Cannabist Deptford, Baked by the river, NightJar, Shorehouse Canna, Nova Farms, Valley Wellness, A21, The Cannabis Place, Hashery, and more coming soon.

ButACake extends heartfelt thanks to its partners and the Vineland team at The Cannabist Company for helping them seize this opportunity and for their dedication to promoting diversity within the cannabis industry.

Established in 2016, ButACake started as a baked goods enterprise. Figaro, a first-generation Haitian American pastry chef, initially sold non-infused cakes and sauces at farmers markets in Jersey City.

Over time, the business evolved into an exclusively edibles brand. This transformation led Figaro to pursue a manufacturing license with the state in preparation for the opening of New Jersey’s recreational market in April 2022. ButACake received a conditional license in October 2022 and converted to an annual license in September 2023, becoming the first woman- and minority-owned cannabis product manufacturer in New Jersey.

On her journey from legacy to legality, Matha Figaro transitioned from running a baked goods business to founding CannPowerment in December 2021. Co-founded with childhood friend James Barrett, CannPowerment offers manufacturing, packaging, and production services for cannabis brands aiming to enter the market. This move helped raise capital, boost brand visibility, and gain market experience in preparation for obtaining a cannabis license.

Through CannPowerment, ButACake collaborates with cannabis manufacturers across the country, making high-quality cannabis ingestibles accessible to a wider audience and supporting minority- and women-owned businesses in the industry.
