New Jersey Diner Review #311: The Flight Deck Diner in Rio Grande, NJ
The truth is that I haven’t been to many diners in 2020 or 2021 (so far), so when I knew I would be taking a road trip to Cape May I also knew I had to find a diner to visit. Luckily, The Flight Deck Diner was a diner I had not checked off my list.
The diner is located at the Cape May Airport in Rio Grande, NJ. It’s a unique spot where customers can interact with pilots and physically see their planes take off. Other businesses at the Cape include the Vietnam Veterans Museum, NASW Museum, and Cape May Brewery so you can make a whole afternoon visit.
Family-owned by Sean and Christine McMullan, the couple took over the Flight Deck Diner in July 2010. Since then they’ve seen the diner “take off” (their pun, not mine) and became a local favorite due to their homemade meals and fresh ingredients.
When I walked in the door I was seated at the counter, and immediately ordered a coffee. It has been a long drive.
Items on their menu include items like their “chunky monkey pancakes”, French toast, omelets, burgers, cheesesteaks, salads, sandwiches, and homemade soup including their popular seafood soup (which can also be served in a bread bowl). Breakfast is served all day and features their “Flight Deck Breakfast Favorites” which are named after flight terms and aircraft.
Oh! And their sticky buns. Very popular.

I ordered the “Flying Saucer Egg Sandwich” made with one fried egg, choice of meat and cheese, choice of bread, and choice of homefries or tater tots. I went with bacon, cheddar, kaiser, and tots.
My favorite thing about this diner beside the food? The affordability! I spent $10 my entire visit. I wish all NJ diners were like that…
