My Stay at The George in Montclair (& Why I Never Wanted to Leave)

Whether you’re looking for a staycation or a long-term vacation, I highly recommend the hotel I stayed at during my birthday (the “big 3-5”) weekend: The George located in downtown Montclair, New Jersey.

For many reasons, Montclair is a super hip spot from its local shops, gardens, fantastic restaurants, coffee scene, and brewery. I’ve been wanting to stay overnight there for an opportunity to explore the area, and The George was the perfect pick.

The hotel is owned and operated by Bobbi Brown (yes, that Bobbi Brown) and her husband Steven Plofker. What was once the “Georgian Inn” was renovated by the couple to create a unique, boutique hotel in downtown Montclair.

The hotel itself is modern in design but pays respect to its historic bones. They were careful to preserve the original structure of the building including its exposed brick and original details like their stunning stairwell.

Some history on the building (located on their Website).
“Built-in 1902 as a private home for Charles Van Vleck, The Georgian Inn was later converted into a residential hotel for short-term stays in the 1940s. At this time, the Montclair branch of the French Institute Alliance Française (FIAF) relocated its New Jersey headquarters to the Queen Anne carriage house in back. In 2008, the historic buildings were granted landmark status and in 2012, after it was purchased, the hotel underwent a full renovation.”

As the Creative Director, Bobbi Brown used her talents for style and design to reimagine the space and incorporated hand-picked products from some of her favorite brands. Rooms are equipped with SMEG, Nespresso, Casper mattresses, Audio Pro, and Dyson to name a few.

I love a theme, and so does The George. All 31 hotel rooms are completely different, with the majority of them being names. Even the Gym is called “Jim”. We got to stay in the Olivia Room so guess what our theme was?

Yes, Olivia’s! Whether it be Olivia Newton-John (who is the focus of the room), Liv Tyler, Olive Oil, Oliva Coleman, Olivia Munn, or John Oliver there were many iterations of Olivia/Oliver/Olive featured in our room.

The room also had the most comfortable leather chairs and as I was about to sit on them I noticed the hotel staff has gifted me a bottle of wine. So sweet!

Speaking of sweet, one of my favorite things about the hotel was their “not-so” secret candy closet. One of the perks of being a guest at The George is getting access to full-size candy bars and candy throwbacks like ring-pops.

We happened to visit the hotel during the rainest weekend ever, but we were happy to hang out at the hotel rather than go on adventures. They have the most beautiful library.

The library also features a fireplace, perfect for a cold and rainy night. And yes, that is George Constanza representing George on their mantel.

I love a theme! And PS. They’re dog friendly!
