Vineyard Review: Hawk Haven Vineyard in Cape May

IMG_4879

Cape May has a lot of great vineyards, and Hawk Haven Vineyard happens to be one of them.

I got a chance to go their in early November and had the opportunity to take a tour of the vineyard, drink wine, and enjoy a glass of wine with some cheese. Not a bad way to spend a Saturday afternoon!

We went on a tour with Ryan who gave us a history on the vineyard and how the wine is made. Overall we had 8 wines in different locations along the property.

Wines we got to sample:
– 2013 Riesling
– 2013 Sauvignon Blanc
– 2014 Naked Chardonnay
– 2014 Flying Press White (45% Pinot Grigio, 45% Riesling, 10% Chardonnay)
– 2012 Merlot
– 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon
– 2013 Quill (44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, 17% Cabernet Franc, 11% Malbec)
– 2014 Flying Press Rose (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, 2% residual sugar)

I am partial to white/sweet wine but everything we tasted was delicious. The Rose was one of my favorites since it was sweet but not too sweet, perfect for anyone who prefers a blend but doesn’t like their wine to be too sugary.

While we were on the tour we got a chance to drink the wine right out in the vines! Very cool experience. I would like to do this again when the weather is warmer.

We also got to see where the wine is stored.

Overall it was a very extensive tour and we learned a lot about the vineyard and the wine process in the Cape May area. Thank you to Ryan for all your information!

Afterwards we got to pick a glass of our favorite wine along with a very nice assortment of cheese and crackers. I chose the Sauvignon Blanc and my husband got the Cabernet Sauvignon. We usually tend to split on our wine tastings, myself with whites and he with reds…but I was tempted to the “red side” at this vineyard. All  their wine was fantastic, it was hard to pick a favorite.

This vineyard has a great tasting room and lots of different wine to choose from. In addition to the wine we tried, they also had a “Wine Maker’s Signature Series” which you can taste by the glass or purchases a bottle. Their bottles range from $14 to $40 (the reds are more expensive), but they also run promotions and discounts for buying in bulk.

This vineyard hosts lots of great events through out the year and their wine tasting is open daily. Definitely check it out when you’re in town. For more photos click HERE
