Diner Round Up – The Liberty Diner in Somerville
A few weeks ago I decided to check out the “Goodfellas” Diner in Somerville, but when I got there I was surprised to see that the name had recently been changed to the “The Liberty Diner”. In fact, this opening is so recent, that unless you try going there you wouldn’t even know about the change.
On the front of the building was a “Grand Opening” sign, but this was more of a soft opening.
For starters, they didn’t even have a proper menu. It was a poorly put together, plastic menu that didn’t have too many options.
I didn’t have too much to choose from, so I decided on an eggplant parm sub, something I have not treated myself to in a long time. (It’s one of my top comfort foods) Well, to put it nicely, I was disappointed in what I got.
The roll itself was a basic sandwich roll you’d pick up from the grocery store. The mix of sauce and cheese made the roll very soggy. The eggplant is what really bugged me, because it was clearly another grocery store pick up item that was heated in the oven.
I wouldn’t consider myself to be high maintenance, but I could have made the same exact sandwich at home for 10% of the cost. When I go out to eat, is it too much to expect a fresh, hand made meal? Fries were meh too. How do you mess up fries?
I will say that on the positives, we had a very friendly waiter who gave us 10% off just because we waited a little bit to get our check. So that’s something.
I was warned about this diner since it’s been changed so many times. It was once the Somerville Diner, Pantagis Diner, and most recently the Goodfellas Diner.
Maybe it was because they’re new, but I was overall disappointed with my visit. Especially since at a “new” diner I shouldn’t be sitting in a booth that’s completely torn up.
Hopefully they shape up quickly! If anyone visits this diner and has a positive experience…please let me know! I’d love to see them turn it around!
