Arts Guild NJ Offering Affordable Spring Art Classes for All Ages

Arts Guild NJ, a non-profit arts center located in Rahway, NJ runs classes in the Spring for adult, teens, and kids classes. The classes are super affordable and taught by accredited, talented artists. Classes run for 8 weeks and are generally 2+ hours. See class booklet for details and prices. Registration is now open for Spring art classes for adults, teens (ages 12-16), and children (ages 7–11) at Arts Guild New Jersey. Spring classes begin the week of March 24, 2015, including several exciting new options, in addition to many familiar favorites. Classes meet once a week for eight weeks. Whether students are challenging themselves by taking their skills to the next level, or trying a new technique for the first time, there is something for everyone at Arts Guild New Jersey.

All classes are suitable for students at ALL levels of experience: Beginner to Advanced. Adult classes, with both morning and evening options, include diverse and multi-level offerings in drawing, painting (oils, acrylics, and watercolor), and stained glass. Teen and kids classes meet after school or on Saturdays. Teen classes include drawing and Anime/Manga; and for kids, sculpture, drawing, pastel painting and cartooning.

You will notice class locations specified next to each class description: either 1670 Irving for our traditional Arts Guild New Jersey building on Irving Street, or Senior Center Annex, 125 W. Milton Avenue, for the Annex space on Milton Avenue at the corner of Esterbrook Avenue.

Registration is accepted online (www.agnj.org) where you can pay by credit card, in-person, or by mail. To register in person, visit the office at 1670 Irving Street in Rahway, Monday – Thursday, from 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM or Friday 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM (please use parking lot entrance). Cash and check payments are accepted in person or by mail; credit card payments are accepted online only. Payment must be received before the class begins to complete registration. We do not recommend sending payment via mail within one week of when classes begin.

All class space is limited, so early registration is encouraged to ensure enrollment. Members receive a $15 discount on adult classes and a $10 discount for kids and teens classes. To become a member, or to get more information on membership, visit www.agnj.org and click on the Membership link.

Daytime adult classes include:
Art Appreciation (Tues.) a course that exposes the student to a broad-ranged under-standing of the visual arts field. The student’s understanding of art is enhanced by studying the different periods/movements of history and the progression of art through history.Expressive Watercolor (Wed.) an exploration of this colorful medium including the basics of color mixing, blending paint, and studies in light and shading to create vibrant paintings in your own personal style
Oil Painting: Basics & Beyond (Thurs.) a focus on composition/design, under-painting, color theory and color mixing, and the use of transparent glazes.

Evening adult classes include:
Drawing the Human Figure (Tues.) a class for artists who want to improve observational drawing skills and understand the basic anatomy and proportions of the human figure by working from a live model.
Watercolor (Wed.) teaches students to create vivid, original works of art with an emphasis on color, blending, composition, precision, form, light, shade and the use of brushes.
Painting with Oils or Acrylics (Wed.) is a study of technical, formal, and creative aspects of painting original artworks with oils from still life displays, landscape, and other inspirational sources.
Art Appreciation (Wed) a course that exposes the student to a broad-ranged under-standing of the visual arts field. The student’s understanding of art is enhanced by studying the different periods/movements of history and the progression of art through history.
Beginning Stained Glass (Wed.) and Intermediate/Advanced Stained Glass (Thurs.) emphasize the skills of glass-cutting, foil wrapping, soldering and finishing techniques to make lampshades, stained glass window panels or even stained glass sculptural pieces and holiday ornaments, in two separate classes designed for your skill level.
Drawing Principles (Thurs.) a class for artists of every level to broaden understanding of visual organization, from concepts of form and color to more complex issues of perspective.

For adult classes, students are responsible for their own materials. Supply lists are distributed upon registration. Most evening classes run for 2.5 hours weekly, for eight weeks.

Teen classes at Arts Guild New Jersey include Drawing for Teens (Thurs), with a curriculum designed to build skills in drawing still life objects, portraiture, landscape, and abstraction with an emphasis on exploring the variety of ways that objects can be represented, and Japanese Anime/Manga Style Cartooning (Sat), where students learn the techniques of this popular cartooning and animation style to make their own comic art. All teen classes include materials.

Kids classes include: Drawing Exploration (Tues), which builds students’ skills in drawing realistic and imaginary objects, people and landscapes, while tapping into their creativity and imagination; Sculpture for Kids (Thurs), where students build three-dimensional objects out of cardboard, paper maché, wire, modeling clay and other materials; and Cartooning (Sat), where students tell a simple story in pictures, creating a comic panel or comic strip page. A new addition for the Spring, Pastel Painting (Sat), where students can learn to create colorful artworks by drawing/ painting with chalk pastels.

For all kids and teen classes, students are provided with materials. Adults must provide their own supplies. Most run for an hour and a half weekly, for eight weeks.

Arts Guild New Jersey is a non-profit center for the arts located at 1670 Irving St. at Seminary Avenue in the Downtown Arts District of the City of Rahway.

Arts Guild New Jersey presents a yearly program of fine art exhibitions as well as three semesters of multi-week art classes for adults, teens and children, one-day workshops for adults, summer art workshops for kids and teens, and a variety of secondary art and cultural events, such as lectures and seminars.

It is the mission of Arts Guild New Jersey to present high level arts programs for the benefit of residents in Central and Northern New Jersey. We promote a broad range of the arts and the value of the arts for all people. Since 1999, the Guild has provided an increasing range of art events, activities and programs for a multi-county audience.
