Taste Your Way Through Cape May with Cape May Food Tours

Cape May is a big foodie town filled with amazing restaurants and eateries. If food is on your trip agenda, why go to one restaurant when you can go to six? I explored downtown Cape May through the eyes of Cape May Food Tours, a perfect way to try multiple restaurants, learn some history, and explore the area.

As the first food tour in New Jersey, Cape May Food Tours’ first tour was hosted by founder Mary Ockrymiek almost ten years ago. Mary was inspired to create her food tour based on a trip to Athens, Georgia where she attended a food tour on a whim. After much research, planning, and learning all about Food Tourism in Chicago, she launched her signature Historic Downtown Food Tour in August 2012.

Here’s what to expect when you book Cape May Food Tours (which I highly recommend!!):
– 6 tasting locations that feature a variety of foods from savory to sweet, where you’ll learn about the restaurant and the people behind the scenes.
– Fun facts and tips from local knowledgeable guides.
– Stories about historic Cape May including the 8 styles of their unique Victorian houses
– a 3-hour tour, rain or shine, all within walking distance

NJIB Tip: Come hungry!

Stop 1: La Dona
31 Perry St, Cape May

Lucy Covino, the owner of La Dona, was inspired to bring the traditional Oaxacan cuisine from her home country of Mexico to the shores of Cape May. They make fresh guacamole tableside, street corn, tortilla soup, fajitas, and much more.

We shared their tasty taquito fritos – shredded chicken in a corn tortilla, fried, and topped with cheese, crema, and salsa.

Stop 2: Quincy’s Original
320 Washington Street, Cape May (they have additional locations)

No need to travel to New England for an authentic lobster roll! Open since 2015, Quincy’s launched their first location in Cape May after falling in love with the lobster rolls of Maine. They wanted to bring that experience to NJ. They are known for serving the highest quality lobster rolls at an affordable price.

Of course, we had lobster rolls! They prepare their traditional rolls with tender lobster, a bead of mayo, lemon butter & seasoning. You can also order lobster bisque, lobster grilled cheese, and their delicious shrimp rolls which we also shared.

Stop 3: Coffee Thyme
414 Washington St, Cape May (additional location at the beach)

Boasting that they have the best coffee in Cape May, Coffee Thyme is a great spot that offers delicious coffee and pastries.

Perfect for a hot day, we enjoyed their frozen mochas. Their mochas can also be served decaf, which was perfect since I has enough caffeine earlier that day.

Stop 4: Cape May Peanut Butter Co
516 Carpenters Ln, Cape May

Located behind Washington Street Mall sits the Cape May Peanut Butter Co, the place to go for peanut butter lovers.  They carry nine Nut Butters flavors to choose from (including Honey Roast, Butter Scotch, Capu Cino, Choc Choc, Natural, Almond, Sunflower etc), a peanut butter hot cocoa mix, peanut butter cups, sandwiches, desserts, 40 different kinds of jam, dog treats, and so much more.

Mary and I shared a peanut butter mousse cannolis that were incredible.  They come in big and small sizes, but considering how full I was already from the tour I opted for small.

Stop 5: The Original Fudge Kitchen
513 Washington St, Cape May (they have additional locations)

While in Cape May, you must stop by the Original Fudge Kitchen on Washington St. This is the place to go for fudge (obviously), chocolate, candy, and saltwater taffy.

This stop offered fudge to go so I ordered chocolate chip, maple walnut, sea salt caramel vanilla, and pistachio.

Stop 6: Homestyle to Go
102 Sunset Blvd Unit C, West Cape May

Last but not least we stopped by Homestyle Togo in West Cape May.  Owners Andrew and Christina Cyhan opened their restaurant to provide vacationing families and busy locals with wholesome meal selections that are prepared fresh daily with high-quality ingredients. The food they make is inspired by the food they grew up eating, and the food they fell in love with while traveling.

On the tour, we had their authentic, delicious, beef empanadas. Which based on how full I was, I had to go!
