NJisntBoring Ice Cream Quest Spotlight: Windy Brow Farms in Sussex County

For this NJ Isn’t Boring Ice Cream Quest, I took a trip to Sussex County to visit Windy Brow Farms, (359 Ridge Rd, Fredon Township, NJ).

Windy Brow, named for its windy location on the brow of the ridge, was originally operated as a dairy farm dating back to the late 1800s. The present proprietors, Jim and Linda Hunt, purchased the farm in 2000, and look to their local roots in agriculture to guide them as they continue the family tradition of farming in the Garden State.

In 2013, their son Jake started The Cow’s Brow Creamery. Windy Brow Farm’s Cow Brow Creamery makes fresh, local homemade ice cream with the finest homegrown ingredients. They produce traditional ice cream with 14% butterfat as well as vegan ice cream, and dairy free sorbets.

All of their milk ingredients comes from dairy coop in upstate New York, and they make all their ice cream fresh on the premises from scratch.

The creamery is open year round, so Jake is always creating new flavors to please their regular and new customers. While visiting you can always expect to find 5 standard flavors, 3-5 seasonal,  and 4 vegan flavors.

One of their vegan flavors is their Coconut Cranberry Lime, which is an amazing flavor for Summer! I personally loved it, and if I didn’t live so far away I would have taken a pint to go.

Other vegan flavors they had during my visit included cookies and cream, lavendar agave, and grapefruit rosemary sorbet.

Although I originally reached out to Windy Brow Farms regarding their vegan ice cream, I was surprised to see that only a week later the ice cream had gone viral thanks to their Taylor Ham Ice Cream. And yes, they are the first creamery to incorporate New Jersey’s favorite breakfast meat into ice cream.

The Taylor Ham + French Toast ice cream is the first of their “Only in New Jersey Ice Cream Collection”. Realizing that Taylor Ham alone would not make a good flavor, Jake incorporated maple French toast to give it a salty and sweet combo.  There are two pounds of Taylor ham in each 2 1/2 gallon container of ice cream, so you will definitely have a good balance in every scoop.

The Only in New Jersey Ice Cream Collection features 5 new flavors celebrating their 5 year anniversary. You’re going to have to keep on top of Windy Brow Farms to see the release of the other four flavors!

Of course I had to try it! And I can vouch that not only is it one of the most unique flavors I’ve ever had, it was delicious! Breakfast in a cone!

I also sampled their other flavors like white mint chip, Madagascar bourbon vanilla, honey lavender, cereal milk + cookies, and black raspberry truffle.

I also got to try their Salty Caramel, which is one of their most popular flavors. It was one of the best caramel ice creams I’ve ever tasted, and at this point I’ve tasted a lot!

With so many fun flavors, be sure to take home their ice cream which they sell in pints and quarts.

AND don’t forget to check out their bakery which has fresh pies, donuts, scones, cookies and BREAD. I took home a sourdough bread because after I sampled it…I had to have it. I love freshly made bread…
