It’s Okay If You’re Not Okay

First and foremost, I want to thank all the people who are considered essential – medical workers, police, firefighters, grocery store workers, postal workers, bankers, food and beverage, journalists and so much more. We stay at home you are doing all the hard work and risk your lives. It’s safe to say that once this is all over you deserve the biggest and best vacation.

Secondly, all you teachers are rockstars. I think it’s evident that they all need raises based on all the work they do teaching kids from home. And parents: you rock too! You have had to step outside your comfort zone and learn to be a teacher when you don’t understand the technology or the course work, and your kids are cooped up inside.

The past few weeks have been crazy, and it’s safe to say that everyone is feeling a combo of stress, concern, and anxiety. It’s sadly the new normal around this time, although we are all doing our part to stay afloat during these times.

To combat negative feelings of us have enrolled in therapy while others have learned to meditate. Or maybe you’re ordering more take out and stress eating…at least you’re supporting local businesses.

The new normal wardrobe is sweat pants and old t-shirts. Some of us don’t shower every day and that’s totally cool. Some of us sleep until noon, that’s fine.

What I’m trying to get is that it’s okay to not be okay. None of us have experienced a situation like this before. Some of us have turned off the news because it’s too depressing. Some of us haven’t left the couch all day. It’s OKAY.\

My new normal is this:
I’ve been having trouble sleeping so I get to bed around 3am, wake up around noon mainly because my dogs are standing on top of me. I contemplate getting work done but my motivation is lacking, so I binge watch the Office for the 100th time instead. I am wearing workout clothes but rarely get around to working out because I’m lazy AF. My husband gets home from work (he’s considered essential) and we eat dinner, watch TV or a movie, I try to go to bed for 4 hours….and repeat.

So don’t feel bad if you’re doing something similar! This is my first post in a while and to be honest, I will be cutting back on posts until this whole thing is over (the goal is 3 posts a week to keep you informed).

Here are a few ways to feel good:
– Donate! Yes, money is tight (believe me…I know) but there are local food banks and charities that need your help
– Learn a new hobby. So many people are learning to make face masks and donating them to hospitals. Those people are awesome.
– Meditate. It’s hard at first but keep practicing.
– Practice self-care. Whatever that means to you (reading, face masks, yoga, journaling etc) do it.
– Support local businesses in any way you can ie if you’re out of candles you can purchase from a NJ shop, if you’re out of booze can purchase some from a local distillery, winery or brewery

We’re all in this together!
Xo, Cyd
