WESTERN ART HISTORY: The Big Picture

Not just another “art’s greatest hits” class, full of dates and “isms”, this lively, informative talk gives the big themes of art’s development since the earliest cave paintings, and how we got to where we are today. Includes the most recent findings on the origins of art.

PORTRAIT PAINTING: TWO DAY WORKSHOP

This workshop is geared to guide students in the creation of a naturalistic portrait in Two 5-hour sessions. For both beginners and more experienced painters the sessions will focus on proportions, achieving proper values and color mixing. Demonstrations will give students guidance through observation of required techniques and practices and will help students progress and develop their own portrait from a live model.

CREATING SMALL RELIEF SCULPTURES

Each student will finish a small relief sculpture using plasteline clay and plaster. Each piece will be no more than six inches around and can be abstract or representational.

Sculptures in the process of being cast and some finished pieces will be shown. Students will create their own works with assistance from the instructor.We will base our art on organic and geometric forms referring to shapes that are all around us.

Some quick sketches will be done first in plasteline. Then, a final version will be chosen. The finished clay final will be cast into

plaster through the waste mold method. Finally some touch up and sanding is applied to the finished plaster sculpture.

Arts Guild New Jersey is a non-profit center for the arts located at 1670 Irving St. at Seminary Avenue in the Downtown Arts District of the City of Rahway.

Arts Guild New Jersey presents a yearly program of fine art exhibitions as well as three semesters of multi-week art classes for adults, teens and children, one-day workshops for adults, summer art workshops for kids and teens, and a variety of secondary art and cultural events, such as lectures and seminars.

The Art exhibits at the Guild focus primarily on the presentation of works by notable emerging New Jersey artists. Our exhibits aim to present an overview of current or enduring trends and directions in the contemporary art of New Jersey’s arts community.

It is the mission of Arts Guild New Jersey to present high level arts programs for the benefit of residents in Central and Northern New Jersey. We promote a broad range of the arts and the value of the arts for all people. Since 1999, the Guild has provided an increasing range of art events, activities and programs for a multi-county audience.
