Visit New Jersey’s First and Largest Sunflower Maze this Season
If you haven’t been to Sussex County this season you are missing out on one of NJ’s biggest attractions – the Sussex County Sunflower Maze in Sandyston.
Open from the end of August until mid-September, the Sussex County Sunflower Maze is the biggest sunflower maza on the east coast. The last chance to visit the Sunflower Maze is Sunday, September 18.
This is the 12th anniversary of this family-owned and operated event. Located on Liberty Farm on Route 645, the maze was created by Raj Sinha a Sussex County resident and experienced farmer. Raj maintains the farm with his wife, father-in-law, and son Cyrus who started the farm’s yearly Labor Day pet adoption event.
The Sussex County Sunflower Maze is a highlight every year with thousands of people traveling from all over the state and beyond. The maze is so popular that it’s attracted photographers from National Geographic and the Smithsonian. It’s a picture-perfect setting – perfect for engagements that happen all the time.
There are over 50 varieties of Sunflowers from the classic yellow to pink sunflowers and red sunflowers, and even one called the “Teddy Bear” sunflower. Owner Raj Sinha works with a sunflower breeder to create different colors and sunflowers each season. You can take a stroll and learn about agriculture and the environment while you travel the maze.
Each year there is a new message inside the elaborate maze. This year’s message: “Pray for world peace” along with a peace sign.
Sunflowers are not for picking, however, you can purchase sunflowers as well as other farm goodies like local honey and produce.
You can also purchase a copy of their original book, ” Sunny and the Sunflower Maze” (based on a true story), written by Sinha and illustrated by his father-in-law.
The event also features local vendors like Hainesville General Store with their award-winning pies, Moo for You ice cream truck, and Crafts & Creations who sells famous sunflower crafts and clothing.
