Small Business Saturday: Handmade Art Studios in Hightstown, NJ
Located in downtown Hightstown is a new store solely focused on small businesses and artists. Handmade Art Studios is like a Matryoshka doll – a small business in which inside there are several small businesses. Every time you stop in you’ll notice more and more items at this Artisan Co-Op.
Handmade Art Studio is helmed by Mark Fenton, an NJ artist from Bordentown, who opened his shop during the pandemic in November 2020. With a loss of business from lack of vending opportunities in 2020, he had an idea to feature businesses like himself who also needed a new venue to sell.
The store features unique handmade items created by the artisans like Scrumptious Scrubs Soaps, State Plate Signs, Rusty Old Man & Rusty Young Man, Rustic Wrapsody, Angry Nimbus Woodcraft, Mooreville Pottery, Bucks County Brittle, Quiet Candle, The Artist Spencer (Mark’s son), and adding new vendors all the time. (Including New Jersey Isn’t Boring!)
Also on display is Mark’s impressive 3D handmade wooden signs, artwork, and hand crafted items. Mark makes every effort to repurpose, recycle, reuse and reclaim as many materials as possible.

You also get the chance to meet local makers who use the shop as a studio to create. I got a chance to meet Kate from Rustic Rhapsody…
and Mike Bender from State Plate Signs.
During my first visit, I purchased candles, artwork, tea, coasters, soap, a mug, brittle, and a portable wine glass. It’s the perfect place to find something unique and serves a bigger purpose of supporting a local business.
You never know what you might find!
