Milk Street Distillery: Sussex County’s First Distillery Since Prohibition!
Located in the small town of Branchville, Milk Street Distillery is the first distillery in Sussex County in over 69 years. The distillery is owned by brothers Mike and Gordon Geerhart who turned a 125 year old building into a business producing fine spirits. The brothers, who are are Sussex County natives, quit their year-round jobs working in construction to open their shared dream of having their own distillery.
While visiting the distillery you can taste their different spirits including their vodka, rum, rye spirits, and small batch liquors like their Rice Vodka. You can sample their products on the rocks or in their signature cocktails.
Milk Street Distillery offers weekly tours in addition to tasting sessions. Tours run every half an hour. You can book tours in advance through their website, or if you’re a small group they encourage you to drop in.
I decided to take the Tour and Tasting package (currently $8 per patron as per the date of the post) which included a comprehensive tour, three half ounce tastings of their products, and a Milk Street shot glass.
Our tour was hosted by Mike Geerhart who gave us the ins and out of how they distill their liquor.
After the tour, I suggest hanging out in their beautiful bar area which is very relaxing! There is room in the tasting room bar, as well as a seated area on the other side.
Everything on their cocktail menu is made with Milk Street Distillery products, and it’s a big cocktail list! You can enjoy classic cocktails like an old fashioned, tom collins, mojitos, and pina coladas as well as unique items like a matcha coloda, a dill martini, or a lavender lemonade (which I got!).
They also have a GIANT MOSCOW MULE which is the equivalent of 17 regular moscow mules! They recommend sharing it with at least 5 people for the cool cost of $120.
