Is this Napa? Nope, it’s New Jersey! A Trip to Alba Vineyard
Located in the picturesque Warren County you’ll find Alba Vineyard, a 93-acre estate that dates back to the late 1700s. The motto at Alba Vineyards is “Quietly changing the reputation of New Jersey wines, one taster at a time.”
This winery was founded in 1982 and was originally a dairy farm, so their vineyards are the first cultivation of the land. This means the soils are as healthy as they can possibly be and were never subject to years of other farming and depletion of nutrients.
The current proprietors, the Sharko family, have owned the winery since 1997. Their vineyard philosophy is one of “simple sustainable agriculture; the vineyards are carefully managed to preserve the good earth that nourishes them”. The vineyard and gardens have been sustainably farmed when they came under new ownership and direction. Celebrating 26 years of farming, they are New Jersey’s most award-winning vineyard.
Their new facility features a tasting room, kitchen, outdoor seating, and a showroom with a complete selection of wines that are all produced on the premises.
Alba creates its own compost from byproducts of the winemaking process. Pumice seeds, skins, and stems left over after crush are composted over the winter and eventually returned to the vineyard soil as viable fertilizer and organic matter.
During your visit, you should of course try their wine! They offer wine flights as well as wine by the glass.
The hillside estate is primarily focused on Pinot Noir, Dijon Clone Chardonnay, and Riesling, with minor planting of Gewurztraminer, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Gris, Chambourcin, and Traminette.
On the weekends you can enjoy food from available for purchase from Trattoria Di Fiore. They make freshly made wood-fired pizza, paninis, salad, charcuterie, and other specials.
Before you visit you should be aware that the vineyard is 21+. No kids or pets are allowed.
