We usually don’t think about visiting botanical gardens during the month of January, but Reeves-Reed Arboretum wants to change that! Located in Summit, New Jersey, Reeves-Reed Arboretum has two special events to get you up, out of the house, and in the garden this month!

MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. DAY OF SERVICE

The Arboretum jump starts the new year with special service projects on Monday, January 18th, 9am-12pm, in celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Adults and teens 14+ can sign up to “Clear the Way for Spring.” You will join the horticulture department for a morning of outdoor work to help prepare the grounds for spring. Please register and get all the details at reeves-reedarboretum.org.

Additionally, families with children of all ages can attend the “Reuse, Recycle & Reach Out” program in the Education Center on the same day. You will join the education staff in creating unique greeting cards made from recycled materials. All cards will be donated to a local hospital for Valentine’s Day.

TAP THAT TREE!

Around the fire pit

On Saturday, January 30, from 1-2:30pm join the Director of Education at Reeves-Reed Arboretum and learn the hows and whys of tapping trees. Families will get first-hand experience actually tapping the Arboretum’s maple trees in preparation of the maple sugaring season. Registration is required and the cost is free to Arboretum members and only $20 per family for non-members.

Reeves-Reed Arboretum is a non-profit public garden and historic estate located at 165 Hobart Avenue, Summit, New Jersey and is listed on both the National and New Jersey State Historic Registers. The grounds are free and open to the public 7 days a week, dawn to dusk.

Upcoming adult only events:
February 11, Talking Garden Lecture – Sex in the Garden: Pollen, Pistils and Parthenogenesis (flowers, pollinators, seeds, and germination), February 19, Put the ‘Pub’ in Public Garden Spirits Tasting, February 21, Artist’s Reception – “New Growth” bent-wood sculptures by Susan Manspeiger. Exhibit & reception open to the public. Exhibit runs February 21-May 8.

So, don’t suffer from cabin fever this winter. Come join Reeves-Reed Arboretum in the garden NOW and chase away those winter blues!
