Wellness Wednesday: Olive Tree Spa in Englewood Cliffs

If Wellness translates to Self-Care for you, then I advise you to take some time out for yourself and enjoy a massage. At Olive Tree Spa, a new spa in Englewood Cliffs, that opened this Summer you’ll definitely be able to treat yourself.

I took a tour of the spa with Sue and her daughter Alice. Sue came from the US from South Korea for better opportunities, and always wanted to have a business of her own. “Like many immigrants, I came to the US from South Korea for better opportunities. I ended up getting married, having two daughters, and my life became focused on raising and supporting my family. Now, my daughters are all grown and I have the time to try my hand at running my own business.”

With no massage businesses in the area, Olive Tree Spa was established in Englewood Cliffs and had its grand opening on May 31, 2021. “There are massage spas in neighboring towns, but they are all clustered together and have limited spacing that made me feel cramped. I wanted to be able to provide a place that allowed people to relax with a massage in an area that did not previously provide that.”, Sue told New Jersey Isn’t Boring.

“I always loved getting massages, but needed to drive far (like Flushing, NY) to get a massage to my liking. During one of these trips, I suddenly thought of opening a massage spa in Bergen County. I started looking into opening my own massage spa but COVID pushed back my plans. I know after a year of people stuck at home, sitting all day, a massage was much needed for everyone including myself.”

Although the pandemic is ongoing (as of this post) Sue hopes that as things get better people will be able to relieve the stress they have been accumulating this past year and find Olive Tree Spa as a haven from the busyness of their daily lives. “I wanted to provide a beautiful relaxing place to get a massage without charging customers a premium price. There are many places that offer massages for a low price, but the environment does not help customers to relax. And the places that are well designed and feel more luxurious charge a lot more than what people can justify spending to get some rest and relaxation. I just wanted to provide massage services where people don’t have to compromise on the environment and on the price.”

The spa offers main massages like foot, shoulder & back, and full-body, and their skilled massage therapists focus on acupressure. They are able to identify the parts of the body that are causing customers pain or stress without the customer even telling them.

They focus on working out the knots in your body and use acupressure massage to reduce tension and increase circulation.

During my visit to the spa, I enjoyed a Meridian Facial Massages, which are rare to come by these days. Daige, one of their massage therapists, specializes in this massage that promotes lymphatic drainage in the face, neck, and shoulder areas, which gives a lifting effect to one’s face and reduces any puffiness. It also has certain healing properties like soothing migraines, helping with insomnia, and boosting one’s immunity.

The majority of their customer base is within walking distance or that live in the town who are happy there’s a massage spa that they can enjoy without the stress of driving a far distance. They are already starting to see people come in regularly, requesting massage therapists by name. Because Englewood Cliffs is in an area with a lot of commuters passing by, the hope is that people will stop by on their way to and from work.

Frequent customers can enjoy perks like discounts on future massages.

Sue says, “It makes me happy to see people enjoy their time at the spa and want to come back again. My long-term dream would be to open more locations within the Northern Jersey area! I would like more people to have access to an affordable massage service and relaxing environment in their neighborhoods.”
