Wellness Wednesday: Kula Fitness in Hightstown, NJ
If you’re looking for a gym class that will make you sweat, I definitely recommend Kula Fitness which is located in downtown Hightstown. Before you read on, know that you can attend a FREE class by registering online with code NJISNTBORING.
I met with owner Sara Beauchemin, a full-time school teacher and mother of three very busy children who knew the importance of finding time for yourself. As a lover of movement, she realized that it was important for her to keep her workouts fun and exciting to prevent boredom. Finding new ways to move her body while getting in a great workout became a passion.
She started off teaching at a small women’s group located inside of a local church where she taught everything from boot camp to circuit training. She fell in love with yoga after taking classes at a small local studio where her body recovered from all the challenges of the week.

She went on to get certified in Buti Yoga and most recently her 500 RYT. When her classes outgrew the local church, she moved into the same local studio where she took Yoga classes, and eventually took the leap to open her own space when the demand continued to grow.
Sara’s vision for her studio was to provide a judgment-free space where everyone felt welcome no matter what. Community is the most important piece of her studio, and the name “Kula” means community in Sanskrit.
Classes that are offered at Kula Fitness include:
Buti Yoga – A dynamic movement-based yoga practice that combines asana, cardio bursts, plus strength and conditioning.
Buti Lite – A slightly less intense version of our Buti Yoga class, perfect for beginners.
Hot Yoga – In this heated class you will get the benefits of their infrared heat lamps. This class combines traditional asanas with music-based movement.
Bands – In this HIIT style class, you’ll use resistance bands to strengthen your lower body as well as some upper body toning.
Burn – An intense combination of two of our HIIT style classes, bands and sculpt, for an hour of high-intensity rounds followed by a cool-down flow.
Sculpt – This HIIT-style class gives you 5 rounds of cardio and strength highs with stretching and cooling lows. A full-body workout in less than 45 minutes!
Sculpt Fusion – The perfect combination of HIIT, Bands and Step class, with some added resistance from lightweights
TLC – Tone, Lengthen, Condition – this class combines Vinyasa-based yoga with ballet-inspired fitness.
Slow Flow – This traditional Vinyasa style class combines a focus on the breath as well as music to create a beautiful harmony of flowing movement on your mat.
Barre-less – A Barre class that will give you all the benefits of a traditional Barre class with a little more freedom in movement.
Xtreme Hip Hop Step – Bring back the 90’s with our hip hop step routines using single-level steps.
I took a Buti Yoga class (although I should have started with Buti Lite TBH) and it kicked my ass in a good way. It was fun and energizing, and I definitely left very sweaty.

Sara tells NJIB, “I created Kula to be your home away from home. It’s cozy and inviting. A place where you can come as you are and release the stresses from your everyday life. Here, you are free to take care of yourself, leave the guilt behind and find your bliss! I look forward to welcoming new faces into our Kula family. A place I built out of my passion for helping others on their journey to self-love. I hope it brings you as much light, joy, and healing as it does for all those in our community.”
