The Truck Stop Diner in Kearny: Review
Not just for truck drivers, the Truck Stop Diner is a nifty little diner located on Hackensack Ave in Kearny, NJ. This family owned diner has been in South Kearny for 70 years! Currently the diner is owned by Sam Kolokithas and his family who changed it’s name to the Truck Stop Diner in 1989.
The Truck Stop Diner was originally owned by Arthur Miller and was built by the Kullman Car Company in Harrison, NJ. Up until 1948 the diner was located on 50th Street and 8th Avenue in New York City, across the street from Madison Square Garden. At the time, the diner was known as the Arena Diner.
In 1948, it was moved from New York City to South Kearny, NJ. Up until this day, the interior is still the original from when it was built and is known to truck drivers all over the country. It has been featured in music videos and magazine shoots!
Items that stood out on their menu included:
– Hamburger Patty, Whiting, Hamburger Steak, or London Broil with 2 Eggs
– Shrimp Omelette with Mushrooms, Peppers, Onions & Provolone Cheese
– Oreo Cookie Pancakes (Oreos baked in, topped with Oreo Cookies, Vanilla Ice Cream, Chocolate Sauce & Whipped Cream)
– PB&J Pancakes baked with Peanut Butter Chips topped with Grape Jelly
– Jersey French Toastwich (Taylor Ham, Two Fried Eggs & American Cheese between Two Pieces of French Toast)
– Classic Pancake Wrap (Oversized Pancakes stuffed with Scrambled Eggs & American Cheese with a Choice of Bacon, Ham, Taylor Ham, Pork Sausage or Beef Sausage)
– Grape Leaves with Feta & Olive Oil
– Mediterranean Quinoa Salad (White Quinoa, Cucumbers, Grape Tomatoes, Avocado, Kalamata Olives, Red Onions, Feta Cheese, Fresh Lemon, Oregano and Extra Virgin Olive Oil)
– Truck Stop Burger (9 oz. Burger with Bacon, Onion Rings, Cheddar Cheese and Chipotle Sauce on a Roll)
– Fatty Melt Burger (9 oz. Burger between Two Grilled Cheeses with Bacon, Lettuce and Tomato)
– Sriracha Yuka Fries, Seasoned with McCormick Sriracha Seasoning
– Land & Sea Sirloin Steak (10 oz.) with Grilled Shrimp topped with Melted Parmesan Cheese
– Honey Dipped Fried Chicken
…and much more! It’s a very fun menu!
The Truck Stop Diner has great lunch specials, so I took advantage of the deal. For $8.95 I enjoyed a meal with choice of drink and soup or fries.
I chose an unsweetened iced tea…
and a chicken gyro with fries. Since a chicken gyro is something I frequently order at diners I must say this was one of the best I’ve ever had.
They also have awesome desserts from their homemade rice budding, cheesecake, pie, and Baklava.
Although it’s definitely off the beaten path I’m really glad I stopped by this diner!
