A Journey to Double Tap Brewing in Whippany
In the quaint town of Whippany, a captivating story unfolds – a tale of passionate homebrewers turned entrepreneurs, bound by a shared love for exceptional craft beer. The origins of Double Tap Brewery are traced back to the camaraderie of like-minded individuals, each with their unique brewing specialties and a dream to create something extraordinary.
The inception of this remarkable venture was nothing short of serendipitous. The brewery’s founders, Todd, John, and Chris Mock, discovered their shared passion for brewing through local homebrewing clubs and regional competitions. While their diverse backgrounds in logistics, legal affairs, and brewing techniques set the stage, it was their unwavering commitment to excellence that truly distinguished them.
Among the co-founders, Todd’s expertise in logistics and strategic planning, and John’s keen understanding of legal and regulatory intricacies, formed the backbone of Double Tap Brewery. Their collaboration, however, didn’t stop there. Enter Chris Mock, a fellow homebrewer and a pivotal figure in the brewery’s inception. Pooling their efforts, the trio embarked on an ambitious journey, determined to overcome the daunting challenges of establishing their own brewery.
With the addition of award-winning homebrewers Jeff Mauriello and Jared Dougherty, the Double Tap team solidified its foundation. The result? A fusion of expertise and creativity that would soon blossom into an array of distinctive and unparalleled craft beers.
The hallmark of Double Tap Brewery lies in its diverse range of beer styles. What sets them apart is their collective specialization in crafting Hazy IPAs, European Lagers, Stouts, Amber Ales, and Belgian Ales.
Unlike many breweries that concentrate on a limited selection, Double Tap’s origins as homebrewers allowed them to offer a captivating variety from the get-go. Their collaborative efforts gave rise to refined recipes, transforming individual award-winning beers into spectacular creations that showcase the team’s unified prowess.
Among their flagship offerings, Flood Plain and Bent Brim hazy IPAs, along with The Boot, an Italian-style pilsner, have gained immense popularity. These beers serve as a testament to Double Tap’s commitment to delivering exceptional taste experiences that leave an indelible mark on every palate.
The decision to establish the brewery in Whippany was no random choice. Unlike conventional breweries tucked away in industrial enclaves, Double Tap Brewery sought a different path. They aspired to be an integral part of a vibrant community, and Whippany offered the perfect canvas for their vision to unfold.
The legacy of a cherished local bar, Billy’s Red Room, which had sadly succumbed to a fire, created a space for Double Tap to fill. Through their presence, the brewery aims to not only become a destination of choice but also a cherished member of the community’s fabric.
So, what’s in a name? For Double Tap Brewery, the name is an homage to Benjamin Franklin and the colonial heritage of Whippany. Inspired by Franklin’s reference to New Jersey as a “keg of ale tapped on both ends,” the brewery’s logo features two beer taps facing New York and Philadelphia.
Further entwining history and identity, the brewery’s location was once the Whippany Post Office for over half a century. Displaying historic postage stamps and antique mail carrier uniforms, Double Tap Brewery seamlessly intertwines the past and present.
As visitors step into the brewery, they are greeted by an inviting atmosphere that radiates warmth and camaraderie. The taproom offers a range of experiences, from casual conversations about brewing techniques with the owners to laughter-filled games for all ages. The brewery’s dedication to inclusivity extends to our four-legged friends, making it a pet-friendly haven. With 18 beers and seltzers on tap, there’s a treat for every discerning palate.
