Encounter the Fluffy Residents of Deer Run Hay Co in Flemington

If you have been mesmerized by the “fluffy cows” popping up on social media, then you should be aware that Hunterdon County’s Deer Run Hay features tours on their farm where you can meet these gentle creatures.

Since its founding in 1994, Deer Run Hay Company, a family-run farm, has been a steadfast supplier of high-quality hay and straw to the local community. Kit Crisafulli, along with his wife Lindsey, owns and operates the farm. They relocated to a 161-acre preserved farm in Flemington, NJ, in 2006. In 2022, the farm expanded its operations to include raising miniature Highland and HighPark cattle.

Deer Hay Run Co focuses on breeding miniature, micro-miniature, and mid-miniature-sized Highlands and HighParks. Carefully selecting genetics and colors, they’ve developed a breeding program to produce top-quality miniature cattle. All their cattle undergo health testing and receive daily handling. Their goal is to raise, breed, and sell healthy animals with friendly temperaments and amiable personalities.

It’s essential to note that these cows are sold to farms and families as pets, not for their meat.

If you’re looking for a unique experience, they offer tours where you can explore the farm, learn about their hay operation, and meet all the mini cows and calves on the farm. In addition to tours, they offer a “Meet our Mini Cows” Class where visitors are led into the cow pasture at Deer Run Hay Company, where they can meet and interact with the miniature cows and calves, learn about the breed, and have the chance to pet or brush the cows during their visit.

Highland and High Park cattle are two distinct and fascinating breeds known for their unique characteristics and adaptability. Highland cattle, also known as Scottish Highland cattle, are recognizable for their long, shaggy hair and impressive horns. High Park cattle, on the other hand, are a rare heritage breed that closely resembles the Highland cattle but with a few key differences. They are known for their hardiness, excellent maternal instincts, and ability to thrive in diverse environments.
