Brewery Review: Carton Brewing in Atlantic Highlands
I have two friends who live in South Jersey (I’m more central) and we like to go to breweries together. So when they came up to visit me, we went to Carton Brewing!
Carton Brewing might be one of the more popular craft breweries in New Jersey. You may recognize them from their orange logo.
Visiting their brewery was a really cool experience. They are right in downtown Atlantic Highlands, close to First Avenue Playhouse and the movie theater. You’ll find the building since it’s orange (they really like orange) and their cool cars outside.
Before you go to their tasting room for the first time, you need to take the tour of the brewery (state law) which I don’t mind since I love hearing the process of how a brewery’s beer is made, history, etc.
Apparently dogs can also go on the tour, because I met two when we were there. Maybe I should have brought my two crazy pups? Nah…
Once we finished the tour we headed to the tasting room which was PACKED. They are definitely a popular place to hang.
You pay $5 to try 5 beers. Each beer was 1 token, which made the whole tasting experience really easy. You can hold on to the tokens too if you want to use them on a different visit. I was pretty tempted to do that because the tokens were pretty cool.
Regardless of what you’re tasting, they start you with the Boat (Session ale, 4.2% ABV). The Boat is the first beer they ever produced.
After that, I tried 5 different beers they had on tap:
– 077XX – East Coast Double IPA: 7.8%
– BDG – Country Ale: 6%
– HopPun – American Pale Ale: 5.3%
– Wit Whale – Wit: 5/9%
– Intermezzo – Green Apple and Wasabi Sour Ale: 5.0%
AND I took a sip of the Carton of Milk – Session Milk Stout: 4.0% from my friend’s sample.
I really liked all their beer, but my favorite was the Intermezzo. It was an odd smelling beer, and it had an interesting taste, but I dug it. Despite not being a fan of IPAs, I did enjoy their 077XX Double IPA.
I left with a growler (FYI a 32oz growler and a 64oz growler are the same price) and a t-shirt because they were so cool! I love a Jersey Tee!
Definitely visit their brewery! If it’s too far, at least try their beer!
About Carton Brewing:
Having decided they had something to contribute to the very exciting conversation going on in craft brewing, cousins Chris and Augie Carton teamed up and started Carton Brewing. In the seashore community where they were born and raised, the Carton boys found a turn-of-the-century red brick warehouse and adapted it to accommodate a state-of-the-art Newlands Systems 15 barrel brew house. 6 E. Washington Avenue was turned into an independent craft brewery and their hats were in the ring. Applying a passion for stimulating flavor to inspiration found all around them, they set about their goal: to make tasty beer in the place their tastes were formed.
