Tony’s Freehold Grill in Downtown Freehold: Review

I’m originally from Monmouth County where Tony’s Freehold Grill is not only a diner, but an institution. Located in downtown Freehold, this diner has been a part of the community for almost 70 years.

Despite living in the area of the diner for over 25 years, I never actually had a chance to visit it before. Since they are only open for breakfast and lunch, going there didn’t always fit into my schedule. I always wanted to go because just based on the exterior alone, I knew it was a diner I would love.

I have always been attracted to the tiny metal diners. There is something so nostalgic about them and I wish there were more of them. Unfortunately they are not as common as they used to be…so I always appreciate when I can go to one.

Another day, another diner! Perfect for a rainy day! #njisntboring #njdiners #newjersey

The interior of the diner is very small, but it’s cozy. We went on a Saturday afternoon so it was very busy, but we grabbed some seats at the counter which I always enjoy. At the counter you can watch the cooks make and prepare all your food, which is done very quickly and efficiently. I also enjoyed seeing their old menu on display which featured entrees for under $3. Those were the days…

Since it was still technically a brunch time, and they had an amazing breakfast menu, I decided to get the “North East Omelette” which was made with egg whites, turkey sausage, fresh mushrooms and Swiss cheese. It was delicious! The home fries were crispy too. Overall, a very fulfilling breakfast.

My husband also decided to get breakfast and ordered the “2-2-2”, which was 2 eggs, 2 pancakes and 2 pieces of bacon. They have a lot of great breakfast options like that.

I can’t believe I’ve never been to this diner before! Bruce Springsteen has…multiple times. You can see pictures of the Boss in the diner proudly displayed on the walls (Freehold is his hometown too).

Even though it took me my whole life to visit there, I will definitely be back. Great diner experience all around!
