Roadside Diner in Wall: Review
The Roadside Diner has been on my list of diners to check out for a while, and considering it’s so close to where I grew up it’s hard to imagine I haven’t been there before. *Note: this is a CASH ONLY diner.
The diner is one of the oldest in New Jersey and is also one of the few diners that has a classic metal train car design. The diner, which was delivered to it’s Wall location on Route 33 back in the 1940s, still contains it’s original stools, booths, and a sliding train door.
Fun Facts About the Diner (you can find this info on their website):
– Bon Jovi’s album cover for “Crossroads” was shot inside the diner.
– Bruce Springsteens’ video “Girls in their Summer Clothes” was filmed in part at the diner.
– John Sayles’ movie “Baby It’s You” was filmed there.
Their menu contains lots of great breakfast options including the “Roadside Omelette” (Turkey, Ham, Bacon & Swiss), the “Wall Township Omelette” (Sausage, Onion, Mushroom & Tomato), and the “Farmingdale Omelette” (Pork Roll, Ham & Mushrooms), among some of their three-egg omelettes. I’m also told their blueberry pancakes are amazing.
Everything is made fresh to order on their premises. Even their roast beef and turkey are roasted in house.
In additional to their typical diner fare they offer Italian specialties and other entrees at affordable prices. Their burgers are pretty impressive and include a “Roadside Burger” (Bacon & Fried Onions), and a “Jersey Burger” (Pork Roll & American Cheese). Most importantly (at least to me), they make their own French Cut “Boardwalk” Fries. You can get your fries a few different ways, including “Jersey” style with just a pinch of salt.
Since I was in a lunch mood (it was 3pm), I opted for something I haven’t gotten in a long time…a Chicken Parmesan sandwich. YEAH BUDDY!
What I loved most about the meal, other than the fact that it was made from scratch, was that despite having cheese and marinara sauce…the bread did not get soggy. Amazing! Sometimes it’s the little things.
The sandwich was enough for two people, but somehow I managed it on my own. The fries were amazing! You need to appreciate when a diner makes their own fries and does not get lazy and just gets the frozen kind. It’s a rare thing these days!
My husband got something of their specials of the day list, a pulled pork sandwich, which looked amazing.
Bottom line, I couldn’t recommend this diner more, and it has definitely climbed into my top 5 diners in New Jersey that I’ve visited (So far! Please do not attack me on the best diners in NJ…). Their prices are so affordable it will blow your mind. The authentic retro-ness of it all will transport you back in time. Plus, they have a stegosaurus, so what is not to like?
