Duffers Restaurant and Ice Cream Parlor (Cape May County)
Duffer’s in an old-fashioned ice cream spot in Wildwood known for their housemade ice cream, sundaes & sandwiches. They also have mini-golf & an arcade! They have a lot of creative flavors to choose from, and after some careful taste testing we settled on Sticky Bun! Selling point: it had real sticky bun IN the ice cream. Plus, a small is basically a large anywhere else. Perfect for sharing!
Address: 5210 Pacific Ave, Wildwood, NJ; (609) 729-1817
Ice Cream Choice: Sticky Bun
Bananas Ice Cream Cafe (Cape May County)
Wildwood has no shortage of ice cream, so we were pleased to stumble upon Bananas Ice Cream Cafe which is a block from the boardwalk. They were hanging out samples outside so we knew were enticed to come in. Lots of creative flavors included the “Kitchen Sink” whose description read “your guess is as good as ours”. The chocolate covered bacon won my pick due to it’s creativity, and the staff convinced me to put pancake syrup on top. Delicious!
Address: 400 E Lincoln Ave, Wildwood, NJ; (609) 522-2323
Ice Cream Choice: Chocolate covered bacon
Super Scoops Ice Cream (Morris County)
Heinz and Linda have been making ice cream at this local Parsippany favorite since 1998. All of their ice cream, Italian ices, cakes and novelties are homemade at the store. I got a chance to visit there on National Ice Cream day and couldn’t resist the blue cookie monster ice cream. Their prices are super affordable too, but make sure to bring cash since they’re cash only!
Address: 325 Parsippany Rd, Parsippany, NJ; (973) 386-1447
Ice Cream Choice: Cookie Monster
Bucket and Bay (Hudson County)
The small batch craft gelato company has been on my radar since I discovered they do alcohol infused flavors. Their gelato is made 100% from scratch and they make it with 100% grass fed milk. Creative flavors include Rose Latte, Lemon Thyme, Purple Sticky Rice and of course their alcohol infused flavors like their BLACK LABEL VANILLA (johnny walker black + vanilla).
Address: 150 Bay St, Jersey City, NJ; (201) 503-5588
Ice Cream Choice: Vanilla bean and mint chip
Flipper’s Custard (Cumberland County)
Such a pleasant surprise to find in Millville! This small cash only custard and ice cream stand has been around since the 1970s. I opted to get one of their homemade custard flavors, but they also have CRAZY sundaes (at super affordable prices). Plus their murals are fun to look at!
Address: N 2nd St & E McNeal St, Millville, NJ; (856) 327-1234
Ice Cream Choice: Banana Custard
Applegate Farms (Essex County)
Applegate Farms has been making homemade ice cream since 1848. Although I didn’t travel to their location in Montclair, I did get a chance to visit their stand at Monmouth Park Race Track where I enjoyed cold ice cream on a hot and humid day.
Address: 616 Grove St, Montclair, NJ; (973) 744-5900
