Night Out: Landmark Loew’s Jersey Theater
The Landmark Loew’s in Jersey City is for people who revel in classic architecture and classic movies alike. My husband and I have been there many times over the years, including, most recently, to see Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Besides classic films, they are a venue for concerts, art programs and an international film festival.
Why is the Loew’s special?
Loews shows a large range of “classic” movies, from the earliest films up through the 1980s. An organist plays in each movie, as well as providing accompaniment for the occasional silent film. One of my favorite experiences at the Loew’s was seeing Nosferatu, the 1922 vampire classic, with live organ. The Loews repeats this tradition every year, sometime in the month before Halloween.
But in addition to what it is, why it is makes the Loew’s special. The theater was headed for demolition after closing in the 80s, but was saved through preservation efforts, and bought by the city of Jersey City. Since then, it has been lovingly restored by a group of volunteers. Their before and after photos show just how much work was done to make the theater functional again. However, there is still more work to be done to bring the theater back completely, and it feels good to support this work while enjoying a film.

The theater generally shows three classic movies each month organized around a theme. Admission is $8 per adult with discounts for double-features. Check out their calendar for upcoming films and events.
