New Jersey Juneteenth Celebrations

New Jersey, a vibrant state known for its diverse culture and rich history, eagerly embraces the commemoration of Juneteenth, a significant event that celebrates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. There are several New Jersey Juneteenth celebrations going on this weekend, including the national holiday on Monday, June 19th.

From spirited parades and educational forums to captivating live performances and soulful musical celebrations, New Jersey offers a tapestry of engaging experiences that honor the resilience, achievements, and cultural contributions of Black Americans. Joining together in unity and solidarity, the people of New Jersey make this Juneteenth an unforgettable occasion that fosters awareness, understanding, and a shared commitment to freedom and equality for all.

New Jersey Juneteenth Celebrations 2023:

Montclair Brewery’s Juneteenth Weekend Celebration
June 16 – 18

Attendees can look forward to the launch of the special Juneteenth Jubilee brew, along with a selection of other exceptional craft drinks. The festivities kick off on Friday, June 16th, with various events such as the meet and greet with artist Steve Green, the WDDS Art of Dopeness showcase featuring Corey Lightfoot, and live music from Mel Davis & Friends. Saturday brings an all-day celebration, including DJ Ritters, a live radio broadcast, a theatrical production by Vanguard Theatre, and a vibrant performance by the 5 Outa 12 reggae band. On Sunday, the Art of Dopeness Corey Lightfoot art showcase continues throughout the day, accompanied by Father’s Day Sunday Spin with DJ No Requests and a captivating musical performance by Gail Campbell in the evening.

Juneteenth Walking Tour
June 17, 10 am

Did you know that Allentown New Jersey was a stop on the Underground Railroad? Even if you do, you’ll want to take this year’s tour to learn about the new stops and additional information unearthed by our town’s history sleuths. Local historian John Fabiano will tell the amazing story during a 90 minute walking tour sponsored by The Allentown Village Initiative (TAVI) on Saturday, June 17, 2023 beginning at 10 a.m. in Pete Sensi Park, Main Street Allentown, NJ. With Mr. Fabiano’s introduction, “They Came for Freedom” will lead participants past historic homes, shops, cemeteries and landmarks which played a part in helping escaped slaves from the South reach freedom in the North.

C.H.A.A.C.A. Juneteenth Parade and Festival
June 17, 10 am – 5 pm

A Parade & Festival of remembrance and celebration of Juneteenth, the day when enslaved African Americans from the south gained freedom after the Civil War June 19, 1865. Performances, vendors, food trucks, music, and more. The parade begins at 10 a.m and the festival starts immediately after.

Juneteenth Celebration
June 17, 11 am – 2 pm

Visitors have the opportunity to learn about the history of Juneteenth through informative presentations by various speakers. They can also participate in a Story Walk, where they can explore the event grounds and engage with local Black History. The event features a wide range of vendors, offering a diverse selection of products and services. Additionally, there are exciting activities for both children and adults, such as a bounce house, inflatable batting cage, and more. Attendees will have the chance to enjoy poetry readings featuring the works of Amanda Gorman, who holds the distinction of being the youngest inaugural poet in U.S. history. DJ Bishop will provide an entertaining musical experience, ensuring a lively atmosphere throughout the event. Food enthusiasts can indulge in mouthwatering offerings from BBQ and Caribbean food vendors, satisfying their cravings during the festivities. A highlight not to be missed is the performance by the West Powelton Steppers & Drum Squad. Since 2013, they have held the prestigious title of being the official drumline for the Philadelphia 76ers, adding an extra touch of excitement to the event.

Juneteenth Festival of Morris County

The Juneteenth Festival of Morris County is a lively event created for all families to celebrate the resilience, solidarity, history and culture of the Black community. The day includes live performances by The Kofi and Sankofa Drum & Dance Ensemble, The Bradford Hays Quartet, Lynette Sheard Live, The Unity Steppers, local artists, a tribute to famed abolitionist Frederick Douglass, who made a historic visit to Morristown, NJ in 1865, and more. Enjoy vendors, community resource tables, DJ sets, food, the Atlantic Health Wellness & Career Pavilion and a main stage filled with live entertainment.

Juneteenth Around the Square

From artmaking to drummers to yard games, the park will come alive with various activities, performances, and the rhythm of DJ Fauzi, offering something for everyone. Audible is providing delicious food for the Cook-Out from local restaurants via Newark Working Kitchens Delivers (NWKD). Free meals from The Yard, The Weekend Spot, and Uncle Willies Wings will be available (limited supply). As part of this special occasion, The Newark Museum of Art will be open from 12 to 5pm, inviting visitors to explore its rich collection and exhibitions, including the newly reinstalled Seeing America: 18th and 19th Century galleries. Admission to the museum is free.
