New Jersey Diner Review #300: The Dumont Crystal Diner in Dumont, NJ
It’s time! It’s here! I have crossed off 300 NJ Diners on my to-do list and feel like a diner expert. On anticipation of my 300th diner I did some research on what would be the best place to go.
Established in 1925, the Dumont Crystal Diner is the oldest diner in New Jersey still in operation. Although some may argue which is technically the oldest, the diner definitely wins for oldest diner in Bergen County.
This is why I wanted to visit it for my 300th diner review. 300 diners…where did the time go?
To make the experience even better, I went with the only person I know that has visited as many diners as I have, my friend Hollie. Together we have been to 29 diners, and this diner is our 30th! We also went to my 100th diner and 250th diner together.
The Dumont Crystal Diner boasts great food and bad jokes. I knew I was in the right place.
Louie, who is the owner and chef of the diner, is an excellent conversationalist. He’ll keep you laughing while he’s whipping up some incredible food.

Because I underestimated the time it would take to get there, I had some time to spare before Hollie arrived so I ordered coffee. I like that the coffee comes in mugs that you might pull out of your own kitchen cabinet.
I also fell in love with the nostalgia of the diner. It’s a classic train car diner that’s a complete blast from the past.
There’s also plenty of things to look at on their walls including money from around the world, pictures of old movie stars, sports memorabilia, and signs encouraging you to talk to your neighbors since there is no WiFi.
Before ordering food, I noticed how cheap their prices were. Items on their menu that stood out included:
– Texas French Toast
– A Belly Buster Breakfast Sandwich
– Birds Nest (egg in potatoes)
– Gourmet Sandwiches, many of which are named after local sports teams
– Stuffed Burgers
– Massive subs (which you need to order in advance)
Otherwise it’s a very simple (and did I mention cheap!) menu. Simple = good.
I decided to order the “Dumont Fire Dept” sandwich which was breaded chicken, tomatoes, mozzarella and honey mustard on a roll. The sandwich is so big that it does not require sides.
It was a pretty epic sandwich. I left feeling full.
Hollie ordered the “Amazing” omelette. What’s in the amazing omelette? Well Louie said the omelette was as amazing as Hollie and she trusted that he knew what he was doing.
She agreed it was amazing.
I couldn’t think of a better place for a milestone diner review. I highly recommend checking out this historic diner.
