Making the Pilgrimage to Sourland Mountain Spirits!
Sourland Mountain Spirits is the latest distillery to arrive in New Jersey, and it’s the first for Mercer County. Owner Ray Disch, one of the co-founders of Triumph Brewing, decided in 2014 that he was looking for new challenge. With the laws changing in New Jersey to allow legal distilling, he decided to create a local distillery in his hometown of Hopewell.
Located on a farm, Sourland Mountain Spirits is a already a unique location for a distillery. The property is also home to Troon Brewing and the Brick Farm Tavern, so it’s a fantastic place to spend an afternoon. All three businesses are very supportive of one another as well.
Because it’s located on a farm, it gives the distillery the opportunity to use the freshest ingredients in their spirits. Lemongrass, bitter orange, orange peel are all ingredients you can find in their carefully crafted liquor.
One of the first things I noticed was how clean and beautiful the interior of the distillery is. Their state-of-the-art distillery equipment comes from Hungary, and gives off a cool “Steam Punk” vibe.
Sourland Spirits is currently producing vodka and gin, with plans to expand in the future. Each bottle is numbered, making every purchased bottle unqiue. The bottles also feature the coordinates of the distillery, as well as a map of the Sourlands area.
If you’re looking to tour the distillery, you can schedule in advance via their website. Each tour takes about 30ish minutes and supplies you with a shot glass that you can take to the Brick Farm Tavern for a tasting. At Brick Farm Tavern you can also order a signature cocktail using Sourland Spirits’ vodka and gin, as well as purchase bottles of their liquor.

In December of 2014, Sourland Mountain Spirits founder Ray Disch decided he was ready for a new challenge. Just the year before, craft distilling became legal in New Jersey so creating a local distillery in his hometown of Hopewell seemed like an exciting endeavor.
Working with a team of accomplished, visionary partners who listened to his dream and helped him bring it to life, Ray was able to grow Sourland Mountain Spirits from a mere idea to a real business becoming the first Farm Distillery in Mercer County since Prohibition.
Sourland Mountain Spirits is a lead supporter of the Sourland Conservancy, an organization dedicated to protecting, preserving and promoting the unique character of the Sourland Mountain region, a 17- mile long ridge extending from the Delaware River at Lambertville to the western end of Hillsborough Township near the community of Neshanic, through Montgomery Township and into Hopewell Township in Mercer County.
