Ever wonder how you can live the fairy tale life, but than you are reminded you live in New Jersey. Well look no further than ‘South Mountain Reservation‘. From the enchanted forest setting to the whimsical feel of the woods it’s hard to believe you are still in New Jersey and not a storybook. So if you want to step into the pages for the ultimate fantasy setting you must start your journey along the Rahway Trail.
To enter the Rahway Trail you must enter at the Locust Grove entrance just off Glen Avenue in Millburn. As soon as you enter, the mystical journey begins. You immediately step into a fairy’s paradise.
About five years ago these tiny fairy homes started to appear, and so the fairy trail was started. Ever since then the area has become more and more fairy friendly. New homes popping up all the time. You too can also contribute to this trail as long as you follow some fairy rules. “Natural materials only. No plastic or glass. Do NOT paint trees.” Otherwise your creativity is welcomed and appreciated by the fairies and the fairy trail’s creator. So feel free to contribute but please never remove anything. You wouldn’t like it if someone stole your bed. Oh and always mind you step, you never know what you might find.
The adventure doesn’t end there though.
Now if you journey on the Rahway Trail past the fairy home creations you’ll find even more to the story that is South Mountain Reservation. As you journey deeper into the woods you’ll follow the river and cross over several bridges that are surely where some trolls call home. Possibly a good idea to have something to pay the toll. Now if you are so lucky to cross you’ll notice the woods are alive with plants, trees, and many chipmunks.
But the journey doesn’t end there, eventually you will come across the Hemlock Falls. A beautiful and on the path, natural wonder. It may be small in comparison to other falls but is still beautiful in its own way.
The trail is nothing but magical. As a famous fairy once said “Laughter is timeless, imagination has no age, dreams are forever.” These words couldn’t be more perfect for this trail. Miss Bell must have visited here and stayed at one of the many donated homes for her kind, when she was inspired with these words. So if you ever want to take a break and step into a fairytale or if you have a love for nature and the beauty it has to offer this is the place for you.
And that’s just a piece of the tale that is New Jersey.
