Krogh’s Restaurant & Brew Pub: Review
Last week I reviewed Angry Erik Brewing Co, but on the same day I visited Krogh’s Restaurant and Brew Pub for lunch. This brew pub, located in Sparta, is only 15 minutes away from Angry Erik so you can easily visit both in one day. Not only do you get great beer, but you can have a meal too!
My first impression of the location was that it was in a great downtown-like area filled with local businesses, shops, and restaurants. It’s also very close to a country club, which overlooks a beautiful lake called Lake Mohawk. Very picturesque. Because it’s in a downtownish area, they don’t have their own parking lot. Luckily we grabbed some street parking.
As you can see, the building has a lot of character. It also happens to be a historical landmark. It was originally built in 1927 when it was a tea and gift shoppe. It has been Krogh’s since 1937, and was sold to it’s current owner in 1981. It’s been a brewpub since 1998.
The restaurant has a lot of character. They have great wood carvings and stained glass:
One of my favorites was our table. Look at all the detail! Handcrafted beer and furniture? Gotta love it. I would love to recreate this…
Anyway…
We knew that had a lot of beer on tap, so we decided to get a flight. For $13 you can try all 7 beers, which is an amazing deal. However, if you have a NJ Craft Beer membership you can get this for half the price. I was floored when we saw our bill. GREAT deal.
Check out all this beer! I loved the serving plate it was on too. Everything about the design and decor of the restaurant was so cohesive.
They were out of two of their regular beers (Gold and Stout), so they replaced them with some of their specials.
Beers we tried:
– Three Sisters Golden Ale 4% ABV; An American-style filtered wheat ale.
– Alpine Glow Red Ale 4.5% ABV
– Brogden Meadow Pale Ale 5.3% ABV
– Krogh Hop IPA 5.4% ABV; Surprisingly from the name, not too hoppy. Which I approve.
– Broden Meadow Pale Ale CASK 5.3% ABV (limited/seasonal)
– Bud’s Resumé Double IPA – their 1500th brew! Crazy!
– Belgian Dubbel 6.5% ABV; aged in red wine barrels. Delicious! (seasonal)
I literally loved everything I tried but if I *had* to pick a favorite I would choose the Three Sisters. It’s amazing that they have brewed 1500 different brews. If you had them, you would understand. There wasn’t one beer I did not like, which is rare.
And yes, they do have growlers so you can take the beer home with you.
Because their a restaurant, they serve food (duh) and they have a really great menu. After countless back and forth deciding on what to get, I ended up getting a Welsh Rarebit Chicken Sandwich. This is an open faced sandwich with their Welsh Rarebit Sauce (cheddar cheese and beer). Since I knew I couldn’t get that anywhere else, and because it got our waitress’s approval, that is what I decided. They have a lot to choose from ranging from typical bar food, sandwiches, burgers, and dinner entrees.
The cheese sauce was perfect for the fries.
They are also known for their famous mud pies, so we had to get one. We shared 1 slice between the 4 of us, but I could have easily gotten one on my own. This one in particular is their Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough mud pie. (chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream with a chocolate graham cracker crust; served with whipped cream and a drizzle of chocolate syrup). SO good.
Overall, this is a great brew pub and restaurant and I highly recommend it. The beers and the food were fantastic and it’s worth another visit.
