NJISNTBORING Ice Cream Quest Spotlight: Koneheads in Ewing

Koneheads Ice Cream (1980 N Olden Ave, Ewing Township) is the brain child of owner Dan Marrazzo who took all of his hobbies and combined them into one amazing ice cream shop.

After studying film in college, which he later dropped because he was more interested in culinary arts, Marrazzo was looking into starting a food truck until an opportunity for a store front location opened up 2 doors down from his father’s laundromat. Because there were no ice cream places in the area that weren’t part of a national chain, it seemed like a great business to start. Koneheads opened for business in Summer of 2015.

The ice cream shop offers anywhere between 6-7 flavors at a time. They make their own custom flavors like Green Tea and Bananas Foster for the Summer, Fresh Toast, Salted Caramel, Pumpkin for Fall, and Peppermint in the Winter just to name a few. Marrazzo, who is also a homebrewer, makes an awesome oatmeal stout ice cream as well.

At Koneheads you can find lots of sweet treats to satisfy your sweet tooth. In addition to ice cream, they make creative sundaes, milk shakes, floats, banana splits, and their famous waffles. Plus, they sell lots of amazing vintage candy.

Their Liege Waffles definitely set them apart from other ice cream places. This Belgian treat is made with brioche bread! Their waffles are so popular that they do a weekly waffle sundae special. Some customers just order the waffle “naked”.

Of course I had to try one…

My custom waffle was topped with bananas, vanilla ice cream, caramel, peanut butter, and Nutella! One of my favorite parts of my trip to Koneheads was seeing the “Nutella Gun” in action. Dan actually made the the gun himself from beef jerky gun. Definitely a first!

Their is no lack of creativity at Koneheads. They have so many flavor combinations, toppings, and syrups and mixes that Dan creates himself. Overall they try to make everything themselves, including their own cookie dough.

Marrazzo, who was a Temple University film student (like me) names a lot of his creations after pop culture references like “Oh Cap’N My Cap’N” famously quoted in “Dead Poet’s Society, and the “Augustus Gloop” of course from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

If you’re looking for something to go, definitely check out their awesome ice cream cakes and chocolate covered bananas which Dan makes himself.

Something that is very admirable about Koneheads is how involved they are with the Ewing Twp/Trenton area. They are always doing free ice cream promotions to encourage kindness in the community. They most recently did a “Pint for Pint” campaign which partnered with the Community Blood Council of NJ. All summer long, if you donate blood at the CBCNJ, you’ll get a free pint of ice cream. What an awesome deal!

Their customers are important to Koneheads, and they enjoy their repeat business so much they came up with a customer rewards program. If something is not on the menu that a customer is looking for, they’ll do their best to make it for them.  Plus they accept bitcoin as payment!
