NJIsntBoring Ice Cream Spotlight: K’s Brain Freeze
As someone who is always on the hunt for incredible homemade ice cream, I was very excited when I learned of a place that was only 15 minutes from my house…K’s Brain Freeze! This Old Bridge/Matawan institution has been in business since 2012.
If you asked me what makes K’s Brain Freeze unique, I would definitely say it’s owner and ice cream maker Peter Kotropoulos. Kotropoulos decided years ago that ice cream would be a fun business venture, and dove right in. He and his friend make all of Brain Freeze’s flavors.
When you visit you will typically see 36 flavors for purchase, but they make 200 year round. Currently their most popular flavors are anything that contains peanut butter or oreo, like Peanut Butter Oreo and Funfetti Oreo.
All of Brain Freeze’s flavors taste exactly what they’re labeled as, from their “Devil Dog”
to their Black Raspberry…
Fluffer Nutter…
Carrot Cake…
and Almond Joy.

If you’re looking the an awesome ice cream flavor for Summer, be sure to try their creamsicle!
Other awesome flavors you’ll find are the traditional vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, cookie dough, cookies and cream, and mint chocolate chip. Looking for something unique? Try their Cotton Candy, Twix Fix, Cake Batter, Cookie Monster, and Mocha Mud Pie.
My personal favorite? It’s so hard to choose! Luckily, Peter lets you sample anything you’d like. If I had to choose one favorite it would be their Peanut Butter Explosion, because it was loaded with peanut butter everything. Delicious!
You’ll also find homemade Italian Ices. I tried their Mango and Lemon….soooo good. They also make incredible ice cream cakes, ice cream pies, and ice cream sandwiches to go.
If you’re looking for authentic, creamy homemade ice cream at a comfortable location (lots of seating) I would highly recommend taking the trip to K’s Brain Freeze. Although it’s not famous yet, I predict this hole in the wall dessert spot will soon be on everyone’s must list. Be sure to visit Brain Freeze in the Summer! They have live music nights, and I also hear they make ice cream donuts…
