A Sunny Winter’s Day in Hoboken
When a 60-degree day comes to New Jersey in the middle of winter the best thing to do is get out and enjoy every minute of it. So I decided to head to Hoboken, NJ.
The must do first thing is head down the iconic Washington Street to get the feel of what Hoboken is about (well at least partially about). Washington Street is lined with many bars, shops and restaurants it’s a great place to do a little shopping and basically spend some time enjoying the atmosphere. This street has much more than traffic that meets the eye.
Maxwell’s Tavern (1309 Washington St) which has been around since the 1940’s was a local gathering place and restaurant for the average Joe. Since then it has become the home to many local and up and coming musicians. Stopping by here is a must if you want to enjoy the history of the area and the tavern, hopefully you will be lucky enough to catch a show.
If history and beauty are on your list of things to do that day, park the car and head over to check out the Lackawanna Train Station.
This place is not just some place to catch a train into Manhattan, the rich iconic history behind it makes for good conversation as you walk the over two miles of the Hoboken water front. Lackawanna has become a staple landmark in NJ. It is a NJ landmark that needs to be seen.
After checking out the history and shops of what Hoboken has to offer, I headed over to Frank Sinatra Boulevard and Hoboken’s Waterfront.
This is the perfect place to enjoy a nice run or stroll it consist of a long walkway with incredible views of New York City. The walkway is several miles long and has many walkways that lead out over the Hudson River and also includes park areas for the kids to run or climb, it is perfect for relaxing and taking pictures.
The walkway also includes piers which in spring and summer months becomes home to several food truck events, running events and sunbathers.
After all the walking, shopping, and history talking I worked up a pretty good appetite. While there is an overwhelming amount of places to choose from, on this day I decided to have an early dinner at Bareburger (515 Washington Street).
This place specializes in fresh organic and sustainable food. There are many options of burgers to choose from including turkey, bison, meat or vegetable patties. The combo of toppings is pretty much endless. Bareburger has something for everyone and you will not regret recharging after a long day in Hoboken.
Still feeling hungry, I went out in search of a place to satisfy my sweet tooth. Juns Macaron Gelato also on Washington street was the next stop to enjoy a nice cup of coffee and some macaroons and gelato.
This local shop offers many different flavors of macaroons including a caramel one which I chose to have. While I didn’t order a whole gelato, the owners were happy to give me many samples!! I will be back to order a whole white chocolate gelato!
Later in the evening I continued to walk around to check out the bar scene. The number of places to enjoy a drink were plentiful but I picked Cork City on Bloomfield Street. This place has an amazing craft beer selection and offers many New Jersey Brewery options.
Cork City is a great place if you are looking to grab a beer in a low-key place. You can enjoy darts, brewery events and giveaways or even relax with a local NJ beer by the fireplace.
While some people have different views on what they believe Hoboken has to offer, I can only leave you with this one piece of advice… check it out for yourself! Enjoy the walking, shops, bars and discover your own hidden gems in a great city.
