Free Gallery Event Begins Tomorrow – Ellen Martin, the “a ban don ed” series in Westfield

In addition to monthly group exhibitions in their main gallery, Gallery U is now featuring a monthly solo exhibition by local artists in their boutique wall. July will highlight the work of artist Ellen Martin. This special exhibition will premiere the artist’s newest series of photographs titled a ban don ed.
In this series, Ellen Martin takes pictures of abandoned structures and objects. “In truth, I have always been drawn to decrepitude. Age and neglect often bring wonderful textures, patinas and soft colors not always present in the shiny and new,” explains Martin. “Yes, I see rejection, loneliness and sadness in these structures. But I also see beauty, dignity, and a certain sense of a useful life lives and completed. I see hope and potential. I hope some can survive instead of being destroyed.”
About Ellen Martin: Ellen Martin was born on the Museum Mile, and spent a lot of time early in life wandering the halls of the greatest art institutions in the world, among them the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art. She moved to Brooklyn around age ten and went to Brooklyn College where she received her BA in Art History. Martin has worked as a Marketing Director, an artists’ representative, and an art consultant. She started painting in December of 2008. She currently lives and works in New Jersey.
About Gallery U Boutique: Gallery U Boutique is an extension of Universal Institute, a rehabilitation facility that services adults with traumatic brain injuries (TBI). The venue serves as a vocational training program whose goal is to introduce people with TBI back into the work force and community. Clients at Universal Institute take part in all aspects of running Gallery U Boutique. Vocational, occupation and cognitive therapies are conducted in the back workrooms. Working at Gallery U Boutique provides an opportunity for adults with TBI to rejoin the workforce, engage with the community, learn new skills, and experience the transformative power of art through exposure to existing are and creation of their own artwork.
