Annual Thomas Paine Scavenger Hunt – Jan 21 – 25

Untitled

Thomas Paine, political activist, author, political theorist and revolutionary, once resided in Bordentown City. Most people do not know the fact that Thomas Paine isn’t actually buried anywhere. As the story goes, after his death, Paine’s body was brought to New Rochelle, but as the Quakers would not allow it to be buried in their grave-yard per his last will, his remains were buried under a walnut tree on his farm. In 1819, the English agrarian radical journalist William Cobbett dug up his bones and transported them back to England with the intention to give Paine a heroic reburial on his native soil, but this never came to pass. The bones were still among Cobbett’s effects when he died over twenty years later, but were later lost. There is no confirmed story about what happened to them after that Get your Map and help us find Thomas Paine’s bones hidden in Bordentown City. Free to participate and prizes.

Dates: January 21st – 25th, 2015
