Devil’s Creek Brewery in Collingswood: Review

This past Friday I was lucky enough to be invited to the “VIP” opening of Devil’s Creek Brewery before they opened to the public the following day (I saw pictures of lines around the door). The opening of the brewery is HISTORIC because Collingswood is a dry town, and now for the first time people can purchase craft beer right in the heart of the downtown area.

The brewery is owned by a South Jersey couple, Anthony and Kathy Abate. Anthony has been a home brewer for 20 years, and Kathy is a graphic designer who designed their website, logo and does the marketing for brewery. Together as a team they made their dream of opening a brewery a reality, and I was happy I finally got to meet them in person after talking via email for the last few months.

Right off the back I knew this brewery was going to be a great addition to the Collingswood community, and that the foot traffic alone would sustain their business for years to come.

I can’t even imagine how busy they are going to be! Good thing their beer is GREAT!

When I was there they had four beers on tap:
– 1 88 Old Ale; named as a tribute to Collingswood which was incorporated in 1888.
– MandarIPA; amber IPA brewed with Bavarian Manderia hops.
– Brown Sugar 69; a specialty ale brewed with 69 lbs of brown sugar with notes of caramel and chocolate.
– Ethereal Wheat; Hefeweissen style beer with a aroma of bananas and subtle clove flavor

All four beers were great and smooth. The MandarIPA had the perfect amount of hops, so even someone who does not generally like IPAs (like me) will enjoy it. My favorite of the four was the Ethereal Wheat, which was very smooth and I enjoyed the flavor of the bananas.

I loved the design of the bar! There was plenty of seating, and I loved the woodwork inside whether it be on the walls or the really cool lighting fixtures. Of course there’s a lot of cool stuff inside pertaining to the Jersey Devil, which is part of the Devil’s Creek Brewery logo.

I also enjoyed taking their tour and learning about the brewery and what inspires their beer making process.

Between being in a hip downtown area and being close to PATCO lines for commuters, Devil’s Creek Brewery will definitely be popular! I imagine growlers will be flying off the shelves as people “BYOB” their craft beer to local Collingswood Restaurants. I look forward to going back!
