NJisntBoring Ice Cream Quest: A La Mode Creamery in Cranford
While searching for for the best ice cream in New Jersey, I’m definitely on the look out for unique businesses. This led me to a trip to A La Mode Creamery, a new and exciting ice cream shop and cafe located in downtown Cranford.
A La Mode Creamery was started by two young entrepreneurs who have been friends since elementary school. Dan Doering and Kevin Castor started A La Mode after seeing long lines in NYC for people craving rolled ice cream, a style of ice cream made popular in Thailand. They knew they could do it better and in their home state of New Jersey.
Without any prior knowledge of knowing how to make ice cream, they taught themselves to make their own ice cream bases until the recipes were perfect. They currently make 5 flavors; vanilla, chocolate, green tea, charcoal, and a vegan vanilla. You can also “BYOI”, bring your own ingredient, and incorporate it into your ice cream order (think fortune cookies, jalapenos…anything!).
When it comes to ordering you start with your ice cream flavor, and then you can add as many toppings as you want! If it’s too overwhelming to make your own decision, you can also get of their House Specials. And did I mention you add on as many toppings as you want?
One of the coolest experiences of being at A La Mode Creamery is seeing your ice cream being made in front of your eyes. You can watch the base being poured on a freezing cold plate and then see as your ingredients and toppings added in. Then it’s flattened and rolled!
I went with green tea ice cream with fruit and honey. It was soooooooooooo good.
My friend who accompanied me got the charcoal ice cream, a healthier ice cream option known to detoxify (and make your teeth temporarily black). However she balanced her healthy(ier) option with a side of their homemade whipped cream. So….
In addition to their ice cream they also make their own waffles, crepes, and baked goods making your ice cream a la mode. You can also enjoy their popular waffles and crepes for breakfast (or all day).
AND they make their own hot chocolate (perfect for a cold day in Winter). They also have coffee, lattes, hot cider, espressos, and cappuccinos.
As of this post they have only been open for four months and have been thriving in downtown Cranford. You can also book a private party there; anything from a bridal shower to a kids party. Eventually, their goal is to expand and franchise on a national level.
