NJISNTBORING Ice Cream Quest Spotlight: South Street Creamery in Morristown
South Street Creamery and Cafe (146 South St, Morristown, NJ) is a family owned business that has been making people happy since 1999. Located in downtown Morristown, this cute cafe makes everything from scratch – from their homemade ice cream to their baked goods, fudge, meats, and delicious soups.
When I visited South Street Creamery I got to meet Carla Williams, whose father and husband started the business in the late 90s. Both men had a entrepreneurial spirit and felt ice cream would be a fun business! Her husband, Peter, took a crash course in the ice cream business learning how to make it at the University of Wisconsin as well as making gelato in Italy.
They offer 26 ice creams and 8 gelatos at a time. For a vegan option, they have coconut soft serve as well! They have a wide variety of choices, including at least one sugar free ice cream. Because they are open year round, they also offer fun seasonal flavors like apple pie and pumpkin in the Fall, and Peppermint and Hot Chocolate in the Winter. In the Spring and Summer you can find berry flavors and Key Lime Pie.
Their ice cream has won awards as well! Their popular Kahlua Madness and their Vanilla ice cream have won awards in ice cream competitions. Other popular flavors include their chocolate and their mint chocolate chip.
I decided to get one of their more popular flavors (and it was very hard to choose), the “Grandma’s Kitchen” which was vanilla ice cream, cake batter, cookie dough, and chocolate frosting. Sooooooooooooo good.
South Street Creamery makes a lot of unique flavors, and recently held a competition so customers could create their own unique flavor as well! One of those flavors they created was the “Witches Brew” made with kit kats, oreos, and Reese’s candy. Another customer came up with a Chai Tea Gelato. I love it!
One major thing that’s important to note is that the family values the quality of their homemade products. They make everything in house including their ice-cream and gelato, and they even slow roast their meat for their sandwiches over night. Plus they make and sell their own granola!
Their baked goods are hard not to stare at (I went home with ice cream cookie sandwiches), and Carla’s mom hand makes their fudge. I mean…really? Not to mention they make their own crepes and waffles. This place is a dream come true!
Being in a downtown area like Morristown for almost 20 years, the family has seen a lot of change throughout the years. The area now is a lot more residential and has a younger business crowd who come in on lunch breaks and for an after work snack. They have also seen second generations enjoy their cafe, including couples who went there on their first date and eventually got engaged there as well!
They also employ local high school kids and display their college mugs after they’ve graduated. How cute is that?
If you’re looking for a family oriented business that makes more than just delicious ice cream, South Street Creamery and Cafe is for you!
