Perth Amboy Brings New and Exciting Elements To its Annual Cinco de Mayo Celebration!
On Cinco de Mayo, Perth Amboy is taking its celebration of Mexican-American culture to a whole new level of fun for everyone. The City by the Bay is recreating the cuisine, sights and sounds of a festive Mexican community by offering exceptional tacos and refreshments from local restaurants, music by Mariachis, and performances by traditional dancers. The main event of the Cinco de Mayo party is a series of high-flying, professional wrestling matches featuring masked Luchadores.
The annual Cinco de Mayo celebration is presented by City of Perth Amboy, the Business Improvement District (BID) and the Office of Economic and Community Development. Everyone is welcome to attend the festival on Saturday, May 5th from noon to 3 p.m. along a temporary street plaza on New Brunswick Avenue between Smith and Jefferson Streets. Admission is free, although participating restaurants do charge for food items, which will include the freshest tacos, Mexican specialty food items and plenty of refreshing beverages. Also, vendors are offering Mexican arts and crafts, jewelry, gift items and clothing.
“We invite everyone to celebrate Cinco de Mayo in our City’s legendary Five Corners section of the bustling downtown,” said Mayor Wilda Diaz. “You’ll taste the most delicious tacos in New Jersey, which are hand-crafted by our local chefs and restaurants. Also, you can be part of the City’s history of celebrating our diverse cultures by enjoying food, musicians and dancing.
Fans of Mexican-style wrestling will enjoy exciting matches by Luchadores who are clad in bright-colored masks and outfits. “The Luchadores are competing in an outdoor wrestling ring, and their competitions will make Perth Amboy’s Cinco de Mayo festivities a “must attend party” for people of all ages,” said BID Chairman Barry Rosengarten.
Emcee David Luna is presenting the Mariachi band’s music and leading the dancers. Enjoy sounds and rhythms of traditional Mexican music while savoring delicious food and great beverages.
Residents and visitors will find plenty of off-street parking in the City’s Jefferson Street deck. The rain date is Sunday, May 6th from noon to 3 p.m.
