Metuchen Diner: Review
I recently got to check out the Metuchen Diner for the first time. This diner is located on Lake Ave, walking distance from downtown Metuchen.
This was a very pleasant diner experience from start to finish. They had a really great menu filled with lots of dinner specials, breakfast all day, sandwiches, burgers, Italian specialties, seafood and more. In case you were wondering this is a “Taylor Ham” diner, no mention of pork roll here. Plenty of breakfast specialties that include the Jersey staple.
There were two items on their menu that caught my eye as being original to this particular diner:
– The Jersey Border Omelette; 3 potato pancakes, Virginia Ham, Two Poached Eggs, Hollandaise Sauce, Served with Fruit
– The Metuchen Burger; Or the #9 Burger (plenty of burgers here). This is a double burger with cheese served on a hard roll.
Overall, their menu is very reasonably priced. My friend got “Half Delicious Sandwich and Soup” combo. You had the choice of lots of tradional diner sandwiches (turkey, roast beef, tuna, egg salad, BLT, grilled cheese etc) with onion rings AND a crock of french onion soup. This will only cost you $7. That’s a great deal.
My husband got a pretty massive omelette with ham and cheese that looked delicious. They definitely don’t skimp on their food portions.
I got something off of the seafood menu, the Stuffed Mushrooms. This was a pretty big meal that came with 4 large mushrooms stuffed with crabmeat, a choice or soup or salad, bread and butter and two sides. This was all for $12.95.
For the soup, I went with Matzoh Ball, because it’s my favorite. Rather than a standard cup of soup, this was a fairly big bowl that came with not one, but two matzoh balls. It was very good, and very filling. Basically it was a meal in itself.
For my two sides I picked mashed potatoes and broccoli. I ended up eating both sides and one mushroom cap before packing the rest up. I was FULL.
I have no complaints about this diner experience. The wait staff was friendly, the food was delicious and affordable, and the diner is cute, clean and fairly modern. I would definitely recommend the Metuchen Diner, and I also encourage a walk around the downtown area as well!
