NJisntBoring Ice Cream Quest Spotlight: Bischoff’s of Teaneck
A family owned homemade ice cream business that’s been around for over 80 years? Yes, please! I traveled to Teaneck, New Jersey to visit the famous Bischoff’s Confectionary that’s been in downtown Teaneck since 1934.
Currently Bischoff’s is a fourth generation business. In 1890 Albert Bischoff started his ice cream business in NYC. Eventually the family moved to Teaneck, recreated his ice cream shop on Cedar Lane in 1934. The business was passed down to his daughter Anna, and then her daughter, Anita. Although Bischoff’s has always been in the same spot since 1934, it doubled in size in the 1970’s.
Anita and her son Steven Mather currently run Bischoff’s Confectionary, and hope to continue to pass it down to the next generation.
Bischoff’s homemade ice cream is made right in the store’s basement. They make 40 flavors of ice cream, yogurt, ices, and sherbet, all of which are offered year round, and will offer the occasional seasonal flavor like Egg Nog, Pumpkin Fudge, and different fruit ice cream depending on the season. Best part? You can buy your ice cream to go!
When I asked Steven Mather was makes Bischoff’s different than other ice cream place, he said that they expect perfection when it comes to their products. Considering they’ve been around for over 80 years and their customer and staff are multi-generational, it sounds like that perfection is appreciated.
Their most popular flavors are their chocolate and vanilla (how can you go wrong?), and they have lots of fun flavors including coffee cookie crush, rum raisin, and chocolate fudge brownie. The brownies are also made by Anita!
In addition to their ice cream being homemade, they also make a lot of their own toppings from scratch including their own chocolate syrup, wet walnuts, whipped cream and marshmallow toppings (seen here).
For my ice cream choice decided to go with their “Black and White” which contained white chocolate pieces, topped with their homemade hot fudge.
And my husband got their Maple Walnut topped with their homemade wet walnuts.
Needless to say that both were DELICIOUS!
If you’re not into traditional ice cream scoops, Bischoff’s also makes sundaes (their brownie supreme is their most popular), and ice cream cakes.
Bischoff’s also sells candy and chocolate which make great gifts for the holidays too. (I was there just at the end of Easter)
They’re also a luncheonette where if you order a sandwich you get your choice of free soup or ice cream with every meal!
Because they’re still a cash only business, Bischoff’s has been able to keep their prices low. They are also open every day with the exception of Christmas.
With affordable prices, delicious homemade ice cream, and a friendly staff I can definitely say my visit to Bischoff’s was perfection!
