A Day Trip to Jersey City

It’s always great when you can take a few hours to travel to a place in New Jersey that has so much to offer. I took a day trip to Jersey City recently, and although I didn’t spend as much time there as I would have liked, I did accomplish a lot.

Here are a few ideas on what to do in Jersey City!

I started the day at Liberty State Park, arguably one of the most instagrammed places in New Jersey. I hadn’t been to the park since I was a kid, so it was great to walk around the waterfront and take in the views. The park is free to visit, and considering they’re always holding events it’s definitely worth checking out. Plus it doesn’t hurt that Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty are there. History!

After leaving the park, we headed to the Brownstone Diner which unfortunately was PACKED so we could not get a table. Boo. So instead we put that diner in the books for another day, and walked around the area. I loved seeing all the beautiful brownstones and dreamed of owning one myself.  We also lucked out in the food department because there was an amazing farmer’s market going on at Van Vorst Park!

I fell in love with the park and enjoyed seeing all the dogs at the dog park. The farmer’s market was incredible and pretty extensive for a smaller space. In Jersey City you stumble upon things like this all the time, and we were lucky to walk into the park after missing out on the diner.

I was in need of coffee, so we went to check out Ground Connection which is right near the water. Delicious cold brew coffee! It was perfect for an extremely hot day. Plus, my husband and I shared a delicious pork roll, egg, and cheese sandwich which was pretty awesome.

Walking around Jersey City is a really fun experience.  You can check out statues and really cool architecture. Every where you look there is something to see, including beautiful murals which are all over the city.

After walking around for a while, including attending a Caribbean Festival which we didn’t know was going on, we went to Departed Soles Brewing Co, which is a really cool, dog friendly brewery which fantastic craft beer. For more on my visit, click HERE.

Departed Soles is next door to Bucket and Bay, which has amazing craft artisan gelato. I LOVED it. Their gelato is made from scratch and they have unique flavors including Rose Latte, Purple Sticky Rice, Lemon Thyme, and alcohol infused flavors like Black Label Vanilla which is made with Johnny Walker Black. I had mint chip and vanilla, although I did try the Black Label Vanilla…

Jersey City has become a landmark for food and foodies, so I was lucky enough to meet up with my friend Alessia, who co-owns Jersey Girl Food Tours, while I was there. Who better to show me around Jersey City and find somewhere for lunch?

We headed to Newark Ave and Grove St where there is plenty of shopping and food. I love walking around the downtown area. It really is one of the cooler downtown city areas in New Jersey.

Before leaving for the day, we shared wings at South House, a funky Southern Style restaurant on Newark Ave.

There is so much to do, see, and eat and Jersey City and I’m glad I spend a few hours there walking around and taking everything I could. For the record, I know I barely scratched the surface. But of course…I’ll be back. Get ready for a part 2!
