Ticket To Ride: The Whippany Railway Museum

On the 9th of May, in the year 1965 the Morris County Central Railroad first open and it was all history from there. Fast forward and its all aboard the Whippany Railway Museum express. This hidden gem is perfect for the whole family. There’s something for everyone to enjoy.

Whether your a train enthusiastic or just love trying new things, this is the excursion for you. The Whippany Railway Museum is the prime example of how history can be brought to life. Once you arrive you are immersed in a true train station feel. As you walk the grounds you are greeted with many different artifacts of the railway’s history. There are old train cars and traditional railway signs.

Now if you cross the tracks you can make your way to the actual museum that is located on the premises. Once you enter the museum, which is an item itself, you’ll be greeted with many items from the railways history. From the building, which was saved from demolition in 1967 and turned into the museum, to the miniature train set there is so much to see. This old freight house is also a great place to spend your time while you wait for your train to arrive.

That’s right the Whippany Railway Museum isn’t only a museum. It has so much more to offer. The biggest of these is the fact that it has a running train on the premises. On certain dates throughout the year you can buy a ticket and take a journey down the tracks. You’ll be able to board the train and take a 45 minute ride up the tracks and back. From the conductors last words to the cars furnishings you really feel like you are taking a journey to the past.

Now if you’re ever are so lucky to take a trip to the Whippany Railway Museum be on the look out for some locale friends. On ride days it isn’t rare that a princess or two, or even one of their friends might show up to greet the riders. So pick up a ticket and take a journey down the tracks. Just make sure not to miss last call.

Whippany Railroad Museum Basic Info:

The Museum is Open SUNDAYS ONLY April through October, Noon until 4 PM.

Admission to the Museum site, including Museum Building, Grounds and Rolling Stock Collection is: ADULTS – $1.00, CHILDREN under 12 – 50 cents. Admission fees support our Historic Preservation efforts, as well as building, grounds and artifact maintenance.

You can enjoy an operating O-gauge model railroad layout, railroad artifacts, a gift shop, and outdoor railroad equipment
