Versailles Diner in Fairfield: Review

In January I visited the Versailles Diner in Fairfield (Essex County), New Jersey with friends (including fellow NJ DIY Blogger Creating Krista) before checking out some local breweries. You need to fuel up on food before you drink delicious NJ craft beer!

I did some research on the diner before we visited so I could get an idea on what to eat beforehand. This was mainly because I was trying to keep up with my “New Years Resolutions” and try to eat better. This is almost impossible for me when I got to a diner because all I want are sandwiches and fries.

So while my friends all got sandwiches and fries…I got a salad.

Now while you roll your eyes at getting a salad, this diner happens to have a very eclectic “Gourmet” salad menu. It’s not just your typical Greek, Caesar, and garden…there was a lot to choose from. The name of this particular salad escapes me, but it came with grilled chicken, grilled pears, blue cheese and was served with their homemade Balsamic vinaigrette. It was also supposed to come with tomatoes, but it wasn’t until hours later I realized I was shorted. Oh well.

I was impressed with myself for finishing this very big salad. It had enough chicken for 2-3 salads. Also, I know now that I also don’t like pears when they’re grilled.

I definitely think I was better off getting a salad than getting a “Heart Attack Burger” which they also had on their menu. Yes, for $14.50 you can get a double burger with American cheese, bacon, mushrooms, and fried onions. I won’t judge you if you get that because it sounds amazing on paper.

The menu for the Versailles Diner is big and offers everything you could want (breakfast, sandwiches, salads, appetizers, a full bar menu, outrageous looking desserts, entrees etc) but their prices are expensive. Yes, you get a big portion for the money, but I’d rather pay a small fee for a reasonable sized meal. Having said that…you should definitely check it out because the food was delicious.
