Review of Skunktown Distillery in Flemington, the First Distillery in Hunterdon County

Have you ever sat around a camp fire with a buddy and dreamed of starting your own business? That’s what happened when two friends, Caine Fowler and Paul Hyatt, started Skunktown Distillery which became the first distillery in Hunterdon County since prohibition.

Both from Sergeantville, Fowler and Hyatt named their distillery “Skunktown” based on the town’s previous name. After sipping cocktails around a camp fire they started looking into how they could create and distill their own liquor.

Skunktown Distillery is very big on keeping things local. All of their water comes from their hometown of Sergeantsville, and their grains and vegetables are locally sourced as well. Their stills and equipment that they use to make their alcohol is made in the United States.

Fowler and Hyatt do everything themselves; from peeling the potatoes to make their vodka, distilling the alcohol, bottling, and labeling.

Since they opened in December of 2016, the distillery offers tours and tastings on Fridays and Saturdays and has been selling their alcohol to local restaurants and liquor stores.

Tours at the distillery are $10 per person and include tastings of their four of their products.

Currently Skunktown Distillery is making potato based vodka, a spicy vodka made with Carolina Reaper peppers, rum, and an apple pie moonshine. All of which are very smooth and stand alone products. I was partial to the apple pie moonshine though…

In addition to their spirit tastings, they also sell cocktails at the distillery including the Island Volcano made with their spicy vodka and coconut water.

I highly recommend visiting the distillery in person. It’s a very relaxing environment, all the furniture is handmade, and you can bring in your own food. I would also recommend making a reservation in advance.

If you’d like to purchase a bottle, their products range from $16 to $30, with a portion of every sale going to the Wounded Warrior Project.
