Human Village Brewing Co – Coming Soon to Pitman!

This past weekend I got a chance to meet with the founders of Human Village Brewing Co, a new brewery coming to uptown Pitman(Gloucester County). Construction on this brewery will start in April, and the location will be at the current Bus Stop Music Cafe. Considering Pitman is a dry town, locals will definitely be looking forward to seeing fresh craft beer coming to town.

Co-owners Megan Myers and Emily Barnes have been homebrewing and touring breweries for a long time. By starting their own passion project, they now get to experience the fun of being able to pivot quickly through their own hand crafted seasonal brews and specialties. According to Megan, they both have a nerdy fascination for researching lesser-known styles of beer, and some that have been basically lost to history. They look to find a specific intention in balancing each recipe. One such style is the Kentucky Common, a pre-Prohibition, all-American style that is a delicious dark sour.

So why Pitman? In case you didn’t know, “Everybody Likes Pitman”, so much in fact that it became their slogan. Megan and Alyssa fell in love with the town and feels their brewery will compliment the other businesses on Main St. This adorable area is filled with local mom and pop businesses, restaurants, and now it will include Human Brewing Co AND Kelly Green Brewing Co, another brewery that is located two doors down (they are separated by a wig shop). It is also home to the famous Broadway Theatre, so now you can grab a beer before a show!

As mentioned before, the brewery will be taking over the former Bus Stop Music Cafe, which was a South Jersey icon known for hosting independent artists and a gathering place for the community. Those who have frequented the Bus Stop Music Cafe will not be disappointed by the new ownership. They will get to see Human Village Brewing Company’s fresh take on the space, and will be happy to see how much won’t change.  The brewery will continue the tradition of the venue by support local Indie arts, including live music.

Since breweries are not allowed to sell food, Human Village Brewing Co allows you to bring your own food into the brewery…kind of the opposite of a BYOB. Speaking of BYOB, because Pitman is a dry town, you can bring a growler to any of the local restaurants in town. Pitman is so excited to be getting these new breweries, that some of them will be creating pairing menus so you can enjoy a brew with the food they offer. I personally find it exciting when a community bonds together and supports one another, and what is going on in Pitman is a great example.

As for what makes this brewery different, co-owner Megan Myers says, “Beer can be equated to music- the same styles can be covered again and again, but when you add a different voice and experience you get a completely different take. We will play out every beer like a song. Female brewers are getting greater space in the market, and we think that is awesome. We strive for balance in our beer”.

Production will start in the beginning on April, you can support this brewery in the meantime by contributing to their Kickstarter! Perks include window clings, t-shirts, hoodies, CDs, recognition on their website and more!

About Human Village Brewing Co:

Human Village Brewing Co - Logo

(From their Website) Humankind’s origins lie within the Village. The Village allowed for the creation of civilization, the specialization of roles and trades, and a gathering place to share ideas. Beer is a beverage of gathering with origins as old as the Village itself. Beer was crafted from the simple raw elements that sustained us: water, grain, and the fire’s heat. Our brewery reflects the values of this archetypal Village. Our humanity is that we create and share. We connect. Raising a glass to these connections is part of the human experience, the world over and across time.

The Human Village Brewing Co. is the shared vision of Emily Barnes and Megan Myers. What began as brewing days, gathering the families together to share time and love of craft, evolved into a passion project. Each woman brings complementary talents to the process with Emily’s chemical engineering background and Megan’s research experience and international focus. With a strong concentration on European styles, Emily and Megan emulate traditional brewing methods and continue the cultural heritage of the alewives before them.
