Cheezen Gives the People What They Want…Grilled Cheese!

April may be Grilled Cheese Month, but if you’re looking for great grilled cheese year round like I am then I must definitely recommend Cheezen!

Cheezen, which was started as a singular gourmet grilled cheese food truck in March of 2015, has now expanded to three food trucks and a take out restaurant in New Brunswick (108 Easton Ave).

Owner and Head Chef John Gentile has been working in the food industry for over 15 years. Inspired by his kid’s love of grilled cheese and he desire to have his own business, Cheezen was born!

The food truck sells grilled cheese that range from your classic grilled cheese sandwich to your more gourmet like Bourbon Bacon Jam.

All sandwiches are made fresh to order both on the truck and at the restaurant!

Since food trucks are a somewhat seasonal business, I highly recommend checking out the Cheezen store front at Rutgers University. Not only can you order from there year round, they are open late (10pm Sun – Wed, Midnight Thurs – Sat), and you take your food to eat next store at the popular Old Queens Tavern (open since 1933!).

I enjoyed the Mac and Cheese Grilled Cheese at Old Queens

You can also order your grilled cheese for take out or delivery…but remember that grilled cheese is ALWAYS better when it’s fresh.

The storefront has exclusive items that make it worth checking out in person. One of the exclusive items is their “R U Grilled Cheese” Menu, a menu that consists of four grilled cheeses you can only get at Rutgers. One of those sandwiches, the “R U Cheezen” (Provolone, Beer Cheese Sauce, Cheese Steak, Bacon, and Max and Cheese Bites) is their most popular.

Their fries are also hand cut and made fresh!

Additionally, the Rutgers menu includes homemade soup, mac and cheese, nachos, salads, and more! Pictured here is their popular homemade chili:

Other popular items on their menu include their Avocado and Tomato Grilled Cheese (pictured below), their Prime Cheezen (Swiss and fontina, slow roasted prime rib, horseradish caramelized onion mayo), and the Prosciutto Caprese Grilled Cheese topped with Jersey Tomatoes and Basil Pesto Aioli. All pesto and aioli sauces are homemade.

If you’re looking for a food challenge (and a way to sample a few different grilled cheese sandwiches), Cheezen has their own “RU Cheezen Challenge”.

If you can eat the “RU Cheezen”, the “R U Pigg’en (Aged Cheddar and Fontina, Pulled Pork, Bacon, Pork Roll), and the “R U Caliente” (Fontina Cheese, Buffalo Chicken, Cheezen Nachos, and Jalapenos) WITH a side of fries faster than the previous competitor…you win a t-shirt, $20 credit to Olde Queens, and the opportunity to create their next sandwich. Maybe next time…

If you’re looking for homemade grilled cheese with a unique twist, be sure to check out my new friends at Cheezen. They’re always coming up with new and amazing new sandwiches. I hear Chicken Cordon Bleu and Beef Brisket are coming soon…
