Brewery Review: Cape May Brewing Co in Cape May

IMG_4918

Cape May Brewing Co is the furthest brewery from me, but I assure you it was worth the trip!

I arranged to have a private tour with brew master and co-founder Chris who took us around the warehouse. They have quite a set up, including a fork lift they are very proud of. There is lots of space to brew beer, fill kegs, and bottle their beer.

Thank you Chris for showing us around, letting us take pictures, and answering any questions we had!

After the tour we went to their tap room,  one of the largest in the state. It also happens to be open every day of the week from 12-8pm.

Keep in mind like at any NJ brewery, you need to do a brewery tour before you can drink. Luckily, Cape May Brewing Co has a self guided tour you can do as well.

Since starting in July 2011, this brewery produces 100+ different kinds of beer which they self-distribute to South Jersey and Philadelphia. When we were there they had SEVENTEEN beers on tap, which is by far the most beer I’ve seen on tap at a brewery. They do flights – 4 for $5 so I tried the four that most appealed to me (regretting later I didn’t try more).

Beers I tried:

– I Know What You Did Last Root Beer – 5% ABV
– Devil’s Reach (Belgian Strong Ale) – 8.6% ABV
– Mop Water – Spiced Ale – 7.3$ ABV
– Turtle Gut – American Sour – 5% ABV

Flights really are the best way to try beer in my opinion…and my flight looked damn good.

Root Beer seems to be trending lately, and the crew at Cape May make a great one! If you are someone who “doesn’t like beer” I assure you that even YOU will like this.

As someone who is partial to Belgian style ales and Sour beer, I was very happy to see it on their draft menu. Usually you will see the standard style beers at a craft brewery – IPA, Stout, Wheat etc, but Cape May Brewing Co really has something for every beer fan.

My growler collection continues to grow, and we took home a growler filled with the Turtle Gut. I’ll be happy to drink it, but I’ll pout when it’s gone since the brewery is so far away. Good thing I have another trip to Cape May soon…

I also wanted to add that this brewery is PACKED even it late November when the area is quiet. We had trouble getting to the bar!

About Cape May Brewing Co:

(From their Website) Cape May Brewery began with one simple question: Where’s all the beer down here?? With that in mind, we decided to open a microbrewery to provide South Jersey with fresh, delicious, local beer and help put New Jersey on the map as a craft beer state.  In July 2011 we found our home here at the Cape May Airport, excitedly purchased our forklift, and delivered our first keg of Cape May IPA to Cabanas Beach Bar and Grill. Since then we’ve proudly brewed all our beers here, crafting balanced and flavorful ales and lagers for thousands of happy locals and visitors.

Throughout the year our 100+ varieties can be found all over South Jersey & the Philadelphia area.  We are proud to self-distribute our beers to over 300+ bars, restaurants and liquor stores, ensuring maximum freshness and excellent service.  While the majority of our beers are only available on draft, we do bottle select styles for limited release.
